ジェームス・テイラーのPMCでみつけた！Sparks「KIMONO MY HOUSE」

Sparks（スパークス）「KIMONO MY HOUSE（キモノ・マイ・ハウス）」（1974年）
このアルバムのおかげでスパークスは世界中で有名なバンドになりました。このアルバムのファーストシングル、「ディス・タウン」はいろんな国で大ヒットしました。特にイギリスのチャートで＃２まで上がりました。「ディス・タウン」が大ヒットしたきっかけは何でしょう。それは1974年5月9日にスパークスがBBCテレビ放送局の毎週放送していた音楽番組、「トップ・オヴ・ザ・ポップス」に出演したからです。多くの視聴者は聞いたことがなかったスパークスの音楽にいきなり興味を持っていました。
当時、「トップ・オヴ・ザ・ポップス」は毎週数百万人の視聴者がいました。なぜというと、多くの世帯はテレビがありましたが、チャンネルが３つしかなかったので、皆がほとんど同じ番組を見ていたからです。「トップ・オヴ・ザ・ポップス」はアーティストにとってとても大切な番組でした。出演ができたら、もっとレコードを売れることができ、大衆文化（音楽だけではなく、ファッションなども）への影響も大きかったのです。
「トップ・オヴ・ザ・ポップス」初出演のとき、スパークスのメンバーの見た目が印象的でした。メンバーは兄弟ですが、髪型や服や動き方は全く違いました。ボーカリストのラッセル・メイルの髪の毛が長くてクルクル、服の色が明るくて、テンション高く踊っていました。隣に座ってキーボードを引いていたロン・メイルの髪の毛は短くまっすぐで、鼻の下に短いヒゲも生やし、スーツを着ていました。そして、ロン・メイルは全然動かず、カメラの方に向かって真面目な顔で、ちょっと怖いオーラを出していました。（見た人はYouTubeで「Sparks This Town Ain’t Big Enough for Both of Us TOTP」を検索してください。）
1971年に同じ番組でデヴィッド・ボウイが「スターマン」を歌って出演した時も視聴者に大変大きな影響がありました。スパークスが「ディス・タウン」を演じた出演も歴史的に大衆文化への影響が大きかったです。50年近くたっても、スパークスの名前を聞いたら、あの番組であの曲を演じた出演場面を思い出す人がかなり多いです。僕はあの出演の13年後に生まれましたが、僕でもよく知っています。
日本でこういう大衆文化への影響が大きかった音楽番組の出演があるか、知りたいです。

Sparks – ‘Kimono My House’ (1974)
Sparks shot to international fame thanks to this album. The album’s success was based on the hit single ‘This Town Ain’t Big Enough for Both of Us’, which reached number 2 on the British singles chart. Sparks’ appearance on the BBC’s weekly music programme Top of the Pops on 9th May, 1974 was one of those performances that really grabbed the audience’s attention and got them talking about this apparently new band who weren’t really new, but hadn’t had much exposure before they played on the show.
At that time, Top of the Pops had huge viewing figures. Most houses had a television, but there were only 3 channels, so most people shared the same cultural experiences. It also meant that for artists, getting onto television, and in particular Top of the Pops, could catapult them into the mainstream, set new trends for music and fashion, and get people talking at work and school the following day or week.
The appearance of Sparks’ members drew attention. Brothers Russell and Ron Mael looked, dressed, and behaved very differently. In the Top of the Pops performance, singer Russell is dancing about energetically with curly hair and flamboyant clothing. In contrast, Ron has slicked back hair and a short moustache, is wearing a suit and tie, and is sitting at his keyboard, hardly moving. Along with David Bowie’s performance of ‘Starman’ in 1972, Sparks’ Top of the Pops performance of ‘This Town Ain’t Big Enough for Both of Us’ is one of the most memorable moments in pop music on television. Even now, nearly 50 years later, when people think of Sparks, they think of that performance of that song on that show. Even people like me, who were born more than a decade after those broadcasts, know about them.
