ジェームス・テイラーのPMCでみつけた！Chic「Risqué」

Chic（シック）　「Risqué（危険な関係）」（1979年）

1970年代の音楽をイメージすると、どんなジャンルが頭の中に出てくるの？もちろん色々ありますが、その一つはディスコだろう。そしてディスコを考えるとビー・ジーズやドンナ・サマーやアース・ウインド・アンド・ファイヤーを思い出しますね。ビー・ジーズの「サタデーナイトフィーバー」のオリジナルサウンドトラックのおかげで、1970年代後半にディスコの音楽は大人気でした。

シックも1970年代によくディスコのレコードを売れていました。そして、メンバーのナイル・ロジャースとバーナード・エドワーズが他のアーティストの大ヒット曲をたくさん作って、演奏して、プロデュースをしたことでシックのディスコの音楽への影響が明らかにわかります。例えば再来月のブログのテーマのダイアナ・ロスやシスター・スレッジが歌った僕がパーソナリティとしての「課外授業の勧め：ロスト・イン・ミュージック」のテーマ曲、「ロスト・イン・ミュージック」はシックのメンバーが作曲でした。

しかし、このレコードがリリースされたときに「disco sucks」というディスコに反対するムーブメントがもう誕生しました。このムーブメントが数年前からだんだん大きくなってきて、そしてある日のメジャーリーグ野球の試合の後にピッチの上でディスコのレコードを燃やすことになりました。実はその日に二つの試合が予定されたけどピッチがこの事件でダメージがあったので二つ目の試合は中止になりました。

このレコード、「危険な関係」はその試合の2週間後にリリースされました。いくつのヒット曲があります：「マイ・フォービッデン・ラバー」や「マイ・フィート・キープ・ダンシング」、そして20世紀で音楽への大きな影響があった曲、「グッド・タイムズ」。

バーナード・エドワーズが演奏する「グッド・タイムズ」のとても有名なベースのメロディーはもう一つのとても有名なベースのメロディーへ影響がありました。クイーンのベーシスト、ジョン・ディーコンはよくシックのメンバと一緒にいました。1年後、クイーンが「地獄へ道づれ」をリリースして、その曲のベースのメロディーが「グッド・タイムズ」を凄く似ていました。（ちなみに、僕は「地獄へ道づれ」の最後の方のギターもナイル・ロジャースのスタイルを凄くに似ていると思います。）ブロンディが1981年にリリースした曲「ラプチュアー」はシックのスタイルを真似していて、そしてダフトパンクのシングル「アラウンド・ザ・ワールド」（1997年）は「グッド・タイムズ」のベースのメロディーをサンプルしました。

1980年代前半、「disco sucks」のムーブメントからのストレスがありすぎて、シックが解散しました。でも、ロジャースとエドワーズがたくさんのアーティストとコラボレーションをしたこと、そして「グッド・タイムズ」がリリースされた2ヶ月後に新しいジャンルを誕生するために使われていたことも、シックはディスコの物だけではないと分かります。その「新しいジャンル」の話は来月のテーマとします。

Chic – ‘Risqué’ (1979)

When you think of 1970s music, one of the genres that comes to mind is surely disco. And when you think of disco, you probably think of artists like the Bee Gees, Donna Summer, or Earth, Wind & Fire. By the end of the ‘70s, disco was huge, thanks in part to the Bee Gees’ soundtrack album for the film ‘Saturday Night Fever’. Another band that were a huge part of the disco scene in the late ‘70s was Chic, and their influence on the genre can be seen through the fact that members Nile Rodgers and Bernard Edwards wrote, performed on, and produced hit records for numerous other artists such as Diana Ross and Sister Sledge (including ‘Lost in Music’, the theme song for my programme on FM-N1).

By the end of the decade, and around the release of this album, the cultural backlash against disco music was reaching its peak. The “disco sucks” movement had been gaining momentum for a few years and culminated in the mass destruction of disco records on the outfield at a Major League Baseball game between the Chicago White Sox and Detroit Tigers. Actually, there were supposed to be two games, but the demolition rendered the outfield unplayable and the second game was cancelled.

Released two weeks after that event, this critically acclaimed album, ‘Risqué’, features several hits, such as ‘My Forbidden Lover’ and ‘My Feet Keep Dancing’, as well as what must surely be one of the most influential songs of the 20th century: ‘Good Times’.

Edwards’ bassline for ‘Good Times’ directly influenced another incredibly famous bassline. Queen’s bassist John Deacon had been spending time with Chic and their influence on him was made very clear the following year, when Queen released ‘Another One Bites the Dust’. (Incidentally, I also think Brian May’s guitar near the end of that song sounds a lot like Nile Rodgers’ playing style.) Blondie’s 1981 single ‘Rapture’ also showed the influence of ‘Good Times’ and Chic’s style in general, and the 1997 Daft Punk song ‘Around the World’ used the bassline from ‘Good Times’ too.

Chic disbanded in the early ‘80s, with the band being negatively affected by the “disco sucks” movement. In a way, though, Rodgers’ and Edwards’ involvement in so many other artists’ work shows that Chic transcended the disco genre, and this is even more evident when we consider that just two months after the release of ‘Good Times’, it was being used to launch a brand new genre into the mainstream. But that will have to wait until next month’s blog.
