The Sugarhill Gang　「Rapper’s Delight（ラッパーズ・ディライト）」（1979年）

年代後半にディスコ音楽への反対ムーブメントがピークになりましたが、ディスコの影響が続けていました。特に一つのバンド、シック、はメンバーが知らない方法でも他のアーティストへ大きな影響を与えました。

年月日にシックは「グッド・タイムズ」のシングルをリリースしました。「グッド・タイムズ」は目立つなベースのメロディーがありました。ヶ月後、違うアーティストが違う曲で全く同じベースのメロディーを使ってシングルを出しました。それはシュガーヒル・ギャングの「ラッパーズ・ディライト」でした。

「ラッパーズ・ディライト」の面白いポイントは、ディスコもロック曲ではなくて、新しいジャンルのヒップホップ曲でした。ヒップホップはニューヨークの道で若い人たちが自分でコンポを持って踊ったり歌ったたりしたで誕生しました。本当の話かどうか分からないですが、年でチックがニューヨークでライブを演奏したとき、「グッド・タイムズ」のイントロの部分でシュガーヒル・ギャングのメンバが勝手に壇上にあがってラップをしましたというハプニングがあったらしいです。数週間後、シックのメンバーの一人のナイル・ロジャースがクラブで同じベースのメロディーを使ってちがう曲を聞きました。その曲は「ラッパーズ・ディライト」でした。

現在こういう盗用のやり方は「サンプリング」と呼ばれています。ヒップホップやラップには大切なことですが、あの時には普通ではなかったから、シックのメンバーはシュガーヒル・ギャングのメンバーを訴えました。その結果でシックのメンバーも「ラッパーズ・ディライト」の作曲者になりました。

「ラッパーズ・ディライト」は世界初のヒップホップレコードではなかったけど、初めてメインストリームで注目されたヒップホップ曲でした。今、シックはライブで「グッド・タイムズ」を演奏するとき、「ラッパーズ・ディライト」の歌詞も使います。これで「グッド・タイムズ」と「ラッパーズ・ディライト」はお互いに影響を受けました。

The Sugarhill Gang – ‘Rapper’s Delight’ (1979)

Although the backlash against disco music reached its peak in the late 1970s, the influence of disco continued. One band in particular, Chic, proved to be hugely influential not just through the members’ work with other artists, but even without their knowledge.

Chic released the single ‘Good Times’, with its distinctive bassline, on 4th June, 1979. Two months later, another single with the exact same bassline was released. The song was called ‘Rapper’s Delight’, and it was by the Sugarhill Gang.

What’s interesting about ‘Rapper’s Delight’ is that it was not a disco song or a rock song, but a new genre: hip hop. Hip hop had grown organically on the streets of New York, as young people would gather and dance to music played on stereos. There’s a story that when Chic played ‘Good Times’ at a concert in New York in 1979, members of the Sugarhill Gang entered the stage and began freestyling lyrics over the intro. Shortly afterwards, Chic member Nile Rodgers heard the same bassline on a different record at a nightclub, which turned out to be ‘Rapper’s Delight’.

This kind of appropriation is now known as sampling, and is an integral part of hip hop and rap, another genre that ‘Rapper’s Delight’ – and by extension, ‘Good Times’ – helped to kick start. At the time, Chic sued the Sugarhill Gang, and as a result they were named as co-writers on ‘Rapper’s Delight’.

‘Rapper’s Delight’ was not the first hip hop record, but it was the first to go mainstream. Nowadays, Chic actually incorporate lyrics from ‘Rapper’s Delight’ into live performances of ‘Good Times’. This is an interesting twist that shows how ‘Good Times’ influenced, and then was influenced by, ‘Rapper’s Delight’.
