スペシャルズ「モア・スペシャルズ」（1980年）

スペシャルズはイギリスの文化・社会に大切なバンドでした。2020年9月「This Are 2-Tone」のブログでスペシャルズについてをちょっと書きました。イギリスで社会不安がたくさんあった年代後半にスペシャルズが出てきました。人種差別へ反対するロックのアーティストのムーブメントに参加していて、ライブによく最右翼の人たちは事件を起こすためにきました、スペシャルズは白人と黒人のメンバーがいました。

スペシャルズはいろんなジャンルを上手く混ぜ合わせました：ロック、ポップス、パンク、スカ、レゲエ。エルヴィス・コステロがプロデュースしたファーストアルバムにはいくつのトップのシングルがありました。セカンドアルバムの「モア・スペシャルズ」はさらに実験的な音楽でした。サイドはファーストアルバムのような曲がありますが、サイドは全然違います。でも、スペシャルズのメンバーは作曲の才能があったからこのジャンルの混ぜ方は変わった印象は受けません。「モア・スペシャルズ」の曲の歌詞はバンドが見たイギリスの社会問題についてです：人種差別、不安、核戦争、疎外、など。

この時期で素晴らしい音楽を作っていたが、バンドメンバーの間に関係がだんだん悪くなってきました。年月にスペシャルズの傑作、社会不安についての「ゴースト・タウン」をリリースした後に解散しました。

このアルバムにある「ドゥ・ナッシング」という曲に「何も変わらない、何も」の歌詞があります。スペシャルズが年に歌っていたイギリスの社会問題は年にもあります。このブログの最初の文に「スペシャルズはイギリスの文化として、そして社会にとって大切なバンドでした」を書きましたが、実はスペシャルズは今でもイギリスの文かとして、そして社会としての大切なバンドです。

The Specials – ‘More Specials’ (1980)

The Specials were an important band. I wrote a bit about them in September 2020’s blog on the compilation ‘This Are 2-Tone’. They rose to prominence at the end of the 1970s in Britain, a time when there was a great deal of civil unrest throughout the country. The Specials were active in the Rock Against Racism protest movement, taking on particular significance as a band with black and white members. Their concerts were often the scene of trouble, as far right groups would come looking to incite violence.

Their sound mixed rock, pop, punk, ska and reggae to terrific effect. Their first album was produced by Elvis Costello and included several top 10 hit singles. The Specials’ second album, ‘More Specials’ was more experimental, even more so than their first album, with a huge variety of influences and genres on display. Side two of the record, in particular, is very different from side one, which sounds more like the songs on their first album. That this variety of genres is cohesive rather than a mess is testament to their skill as songwriters and musicians. The songs on ‘More Specials’ reflect the society the band lived in and saw, with topics such as racism, disaffection, exploitation, nuclear war, and alienation.

Despite their consistent musical output, relationships within the band became increasingly strained during the recording of ‘More Specials’ and the subsequent tour to support the album. The Specials broke up after releasing their masterpiece, ‘Ghost Town’, a haunting chronicle of civil unrest across Britain that reached number 1 in the UK singles chart.

In the song “Do Nothing”, the Specials sing “nothing ever change, oh no”. I said at the start of the blog that the Specials WERE an important band, but bearing in mind current British society, I should rephrase that: the Specials ARE an important band.
