R.E.M.「DOCUMENT」(1987年)
R.E.M.は1980年に誰も聞き取れなかった歌詞を使ってガレージバンドとして結成し、2011年に世界で最も有名なバンドの一つとして解散しました。このアルバム「ドキュメント」はR.E.M.のIRSというレコードラベルでリリースされた最後のアルバムでした。このアルバム以降、メジャーレーベルのみでリリースしました。「ドキュメント」はR.E.M.がインディーズ時代から国際的なスーパースターバンドへの進化を始めたアルバムです。
このアルバムにはR.E.M.の最初の頃に思い出される曲がたくさんありますが（特にピーター・バックのギターのスタイル）、R.E.M.のキャリアの次のステージへ進ませる曲もあります。1曲目の「最高級の労働歌」はその両方です：ビル・ベリーの強いドラムとマイク・ミルズのバッキングボーカル。2曲目の「占領地へようこそ」は1990年代のR.E.M.の曲でよく使われていたギターのスタイルがあります。「燃える愛」はもそうですし、R.E.M.が解散するまでライブでよく演奏した曲になりました。タイトルを見るとラブソングだと思う人が多いですが、実はこれはラブソングではありません。歌詞には周りの人に「時間を潰すもの」と出てきますので、身勝手な人の話だと思います。
「ドキュメント」にある一つの曲は凄く有名です。「世界の終わる日」は早口言葉みたいな歌詞、そしてボーカリストのマイケル・スタイプが見た夢の無意味な話です。でも、コーラスは早口ではなく、簡単に歌える歌詞があります。そして、またマイク・ミルズはバッキングボーカルをします。僕にとっては、マイク・ミルズのバッキングボーカルがよく聞こえるのでR.E.M.の曲は優れていると思います。
そして、R.E.M.はこのアルバムには政治をテーマにした曲がいくつもあります。「マッカーシー発掘」は1950年代にアメリカで行った赤狩りについてです。「最高級の労働歌」は労働者革命についてだそうです。「占領地へようこそ」のテーマはアメリカのエルサルバドルとグアテマラの独裁者へのサポートです。
僕が思うのは、「ドキュメント」はR.E.M.のキャリアにとって一番大切なアルバムです。なぜならば、このアルバムでよりメロディックなロック曲を作り始めたからです。それは「ドキュメント」の後のいくつかのアルバム（1988年の「グリーン」、1991年の「アウト・オブ・タイム」、1992年の「オートマチック・フォー・ザ・ピープル」）に続いて、だんだんラジオで流されるようになって、シングルやアルバムのチャートでトップテンやナンバー1を頻繁に獲得しました。

R.E.M. – ‘Document’ (1987)
R.E.M. formed in 1980 as a garage band with barely intelligible lyrics and split up in 2011 as one of the biggest bands in the world, with dozens of hit singles to their name. This album, ‘Document’, was their final album with IRS Records before moving to a major label, and it marks the start of their transition from indie band to international superstars, which would take place gradually over several albums.
There are plenty of songs on ‘Document’ that are reminiscent of the band’s early sound, with heavy guitars, but there are also signs of the sort of music that would move R.E.M.’s career. The album’s opening track, ‘Finest Worksong’, shows both, with Bill Berry’s powerful drums and Mike Mills’ backing vocals. Track two, ‘Welcome to the Occupation’, has the soon-to-be-familiar guitar style. ‘The One I Love’ is another example of this, and a song that was regularly played live throughout the rest of the band’s career. It’s not a love song though; the line ‘a simple prop to occupy my time’ suggests it’s about someone using other people.
One song in particular is extremely well known: ‘It’s the End of the World as We Know It (And I Feel Fine)’, with its nonsensical tongue-twister verses based on a dream that singer Michael Stipe had, which contrast effectively with the simple and catchy chorus, again featuring Mike Mills’ distinctive backing vocals. For me, any R.E.M. song that has prominent backing vocals by Mills is a good one.
R.E.M. also cover several political issues in songs on ‘Document’. ‘Exhuming McCarthy’ deals with Senator Joe McCarthy’s hunt for Communists in the USA during the 1950s and the band’s worry that something similar would soon reoccur. ‘Finest Worksong’ seems to be about worker revolution. ‘Welcome to the Occupation’ is about the US support for right-wing dictators in El Salvador and Guatemala.
‘Document’ is, in my opinion, a pivotal album in R.E.M.’s career, as the band started to create more accessible melodic rock songs that would continue over their next few albums, ‘Green’ (1988), ‘Out of Time’ (1991) and ‘Automatic for the People’ (1992), by which time they were charting highly and gaining frequent airplay.
