ジェームス・テイラーのPMCでみつけた！Gerry Rafferty「Baker Street」

いくつものポップス曲にはとても印象的なサックスのソロがありますよね。例えば、ポール・サイモンの「コール・ミー・アル」とダイヤー・ストレーツの「愛のトリック」です。今度この二つの曲について書きます。そして21世紀のポップスからカーリー・レイ・ジェプセンの「ラン・アウェイ・ウィズ・ミー」もあります。もう一つは今月のテーマ、ジェリー・ラファティーの「霧のベイカー街」です。

ジェリー・ラファティーの声を知っているかもしれません。ソロアーティストになる前、スティーラーズ・ホイールというバンドのボーカリストでした。1973年に大ヒットシングル、「スタック・イン・ザ・ミドル・ウィズ・ユー」をリリースしました。ベイカー街も知っているかもしれません。ロンドンにある道で、小説に出てきたシャーロックホームズの家にあるところです。シャーロックホームズは本当のひとではないけど、ベイカー街に彼についての人気なミュージアムがあります。

ジェリー・ラファティーの曲、「霧のベイカー街」はその道の名前を使っています。作曲と収録の時期、ラファティーはよくベイカー街でお友達の家で泊まらせてもらっていました。そのとき、スティーラーズ・ホイールの解散後のお金や裁判的な問題をたくさんあって、ラファティーは大変でした。「霧のベイカー街」の歌詞にこのことが分かります。曲の最初の方に大都市で寂しく過ごしていて、お酒を飲みすぎて、田舎の方に家を解体気持ちが強くて、とても落ち込んでいる人の話です。しかし、曲の最後の方の歌詞はもっと明るい：新しい一日の始まりだ、晴れている。お金や裁判的な問題が解決した後、この明るい歌詞はラファティー自身の気持ちと同じでした。

「霧のベイカー街」のいろんなバージョンがリリースされた（ラジオのための短いバージョンやオムニバスのためのバージョンなど）、でも一番いいのは最初にリリースされたアルバムのバージョン。フルレングスで6分間で、ラファエル・レイベンズクロフトさんが演じるサックスのメロディーをちゃんと味わうことができます。

Gerry Rafferty – ‘Baker Street’ (1978)

There are a handful of pop and rock songs with really famous saxophone solos. For example, ‘You Can Call Me Al’ by Paul Simon and ‘Your Latest Trick’ from Dire Straits’ excellent album ‘Brothers in Arms’, both of which I’ll write about in future blogs. More recently, there’s ‘Run Away With Me’ by Carly Rae Jepsen. One more, the topic of this month’s entry, is ‘Baker Street’ by Gerry Rafferty.

You might know Gerry Rafferty from his band, Stealers Wheel, who had a big hit with ‘Stuck in the Middle with You’ in 1973. And you might know Baker Street too – it’s in London, and is mostly known as the (fictional) home of the (fictional) detective Sherlock Holmes. Holmes may be fictional, but there’s still a very popular museum in his honour on Baker Street.

Rafferty’s song ‘Baker Street’ was named after that road. It was written and recorded at a time when Rafferty would regularly stay a friend’s house on Baker Street. At the time, Rafferty was struggling with financial and legal issues related to Stealers Wheel breaking up, and those struggles come through in the lyrics. In the opening verses, Rafferty sings of someone who’s tired and lonely in the big city, and who drinks too much to dull their misery, and who longs to buy a house out in the countryside to escape from urban life. By the end of the song, the mood is more optimistic: “the sun is shining/It’s a new morning.” That optimism reflects Rafferty’s feelings after the resolution of his troubles.

There are several versions of this song, each different lengths, but the best is undoubtedly the 6-minute album version, which allows you to fully appreciate that iconic saxophone melody, played by Raphael Ravenscroft.
