「EMPIRES AND DANCE（エンパイアーズ・アンド・ダンス）」(1980年)

シンプル・マインズの名前を言ったら、多くの人は1985年の大ヒット曲、「アライヴ・アンド・キッキング」と「ドント・ユー」を思い出す。でも、その前にシンプル・マインズはいろんな面白い場所で演奏や収録をして、そのヒット曲と全然違う音楽を作っていました。

「エンパイアーズ・アンド・ダンス」はそのようなアルバムです。南ウエールズにある世界初の合宿スタジオ、ロックフィールド、で収録した、シンプル・マインズのサードアルバムです。これまでイギリスとヨーロッパのいろんな小さいクラブやライブ会場で演奏してきました。ヨーロッパでの経験、特にベルリン、はこのレコードで聞こえます。例えば1曲目の「アイ・トラベル」とサイドBの2曲目の「コンスタンティノープル・ライン」。

「ツイスト/ラン/リパルション」のリズムとホーンの音は鉄道を乗っている気持ちをさせる。そして、フランス語を話している女性の声でヨーロッパの影響を明らかに聞こえます。僕は「エンパイアーズ・アンド・ダンス」でクラフトワークの「ヨーロッパ特急」（1977年）と1970年代後半にベルリンで収録したデヴィッド・ボウイの3枚のアルバムの影響が聞こえます。

「エンパイアーズ・アンド・ダンス」はシンプル・マインズを普通のポスト・パンクの音楽からもっと折衷的な音楽への進化を分かります。このアルバムでヨーロッパのディスコ音楽やダンス音楽を使っています。

このアルバムとシンプル・マインズの有名なヒット曲との差を分かってきたら、僕はちょっとびっくりしました。でも、「エンパイアーズ・アンド・ダンス」を聞くと、僕の大好きなバンド、マニック・ストリート・プリーチャーズへの影響も分かってきました。その影響はマニックスの音楽（1994年の「ホーリー・バイブル」、2009年の「ジャーナル・フォー・プレイグ・ラヴァーズ」、2012年の「フューチャロロジー」）だけではなく、この３枚アルバムの本作のジャケットにシンプル・マインズと同じフォントを使ったことです。

Simple Minds – ‘Empires and Dance’ (1980)

Mention the band Simple Minds and most people will think of their hits from the mid-1980s like ‘Alive and Kicking’ and ‘Don’t You Forget About Me’. But before those hits, Simple Minds had a long journey touring and recording in a variety of interesting places and creating music that sounds quite different from the songs that made them international stars.

One such album is ‘Empires and Dance’, which was recorded at the world’s first residential recording studio, Rockfield, in South Wales, like the album that preceded it. ‘Empires and Dance’ was Simple Minds’ third album, and during that time they had been touring small clubs, not just in the UK but also across Europe. Their experiences on the continent, particularly in Berlin, can be heard on this record, and are especially evident on opening song ‘I Travel’ and Side B track two, ‘Constantinople Line’.

‘Twist/Run/Repulsion’ makes me think of travelling on a railway, with its driving rhythm and occasional horn blasts. It also shows a European influence most clearly through the use of a female voice speaking French. There seems to be a hint of Kraftwerk on ‘Empires and Dance’ – I was reminded of the German band’s ‘Trans Europe Express’ (1977), and some of David Bowie’s Berlin-era music from the late 1970s too.

The music on this album shows the band’s progression from what I suppose you could describe as a more straightforward post-punk sound on their first two albums to a more eclectic sound, incorporating aspects of European disco and dance music.

The stark difference between this album and Simple Minds’ later international hits surprised me. When I listened to ‘Empires and Dance’ I could also hear the influence on several albums by one of my favourite bands, Manic Street Preachers: not just musically on ‘The Holy Bible’ (1994), ‘Journal for Plague Lovers’ (2009) and ‘Futurology’ (2012), but even through their decision to use the same font for the album artwork in homage to ‘Empires and Dance’.
