ジェームス・テイラーのPMCでみつけた！パッツィー・クライン「Today, Tomorrow and Forever」

Patsy Cline（パッツィー・クライン）「Today, Tomorrow and Forever」(1985年)

パッツィー・クラインの人生は短いものでした。1963年3月5日に30歳で飛行機の事故で亡くなりました。1955年から1963年までに出した3枚のアルバム、6枚のEP、24枚のシングルの内、有名な曲がたくさんあります。

このオムニバス盤には12曲収録されています。ヒット曲もあり（「Walkin’ After Midnight」、「A Poor Man’s Roses」）、以前リリースされてない曲もあります（「Just Out of Reach」、「I’m Blue Again」、「Yes, I Understand」）。またファーストアルバムから5曲、そしてファーストシングルの「A Church, A Courtroom & Then Good-Bye」も収められています。

僕の一番知ってる曲はタイトルトラックの「Today, Tomorrow and Forever」です。なぜかというと、2009年に僕と同じ出身地の大好きなミュージシャン、ピート・モリナリがカバーを出したからです。ピート・モリナリのカバーはパッツィー・クラインと同じでバッキングボーカルは有名なザ・ジョーダネアーズでした。

このオムニバス盤に二つ不思議なことがあります。一つは僕が初めて聞いたパッツィー・クラインの曲「Crazy」がないことです。もう一つは二つのレコードレーベルから同じタイトルのレコードを出したけど、曲が違うことです。MCAレコードからも出しましたが、このブログのテーマはヒルトップというレコードレーベルが出したものです。

パッツィー・クラインの人生は短かったですが、その短いキャリアの中にパッツィー・クラインは歴史的に初めてカントリー音楽からポップスにクロスオーバーした女性のアーティストでした。パッツィー・クラインのおかげで1970年代にロレッタ・リンと1990年代にリアン・ライムスと2010年代にケイシー・マスグレイヴスなどもカントリー音楽からポップスにクロスオーバーできました。もちろん現在世界最大の女性スターのテイラー・スウィフトもそうです。

Patsy Cline – ‘Today, Tomorrow and Forever’ (1985)

Patsy Cline had a very short life. She died in a plane crash aged 30 on 5th March, 1963, but between 1955 and 1963 she released three albums, six EPs, and 24 singles, among which there are countless well-known songs.

This compilation has 12 songs, including big hits like ‘Walkin’ After Midnight’ and ‘A Poor Man’s Roses’. There are previously unreleased songs or songs that weren’t included on stuid albums, such as ‘Just Out of Reach’, ‘I’m Blue Again’ and ‘Yes, I Understand’. There are five songs from Cline’s debut album, including her first single, ‘A Church, A Courtroom & Then Good-Bye’.

This record also features the Patsy Cline song that I’m most familiar with: the title track, ‘Today, Tomorrow and Forever’. I know the song from a 2009 EP by one of my favourite artists, Medway-born musician Pete Molinari. Molinari’s cover is interesting because the backing vocals on his version are provided by the Jordanaires, who sing backing vocals on Cline’s original recording too.

There are a couple of things about this compilation that seem a little strange to me, though. One is that it doesn’t include the first Cline song I ever heard, ‘Crazy’ – it was featured in the 2007 Quebecois film ‘C.R.A.Z.Y.’. The other slightly odd thing is that two record companies released compilations with this title at the same time, but with very different track listings. This blog is about the Hilltop version, rather than the MCA version.

Although she lived a very short life, Patsy Cline was the first female artist to cross over from country to pop, blazing a trail and for others like Loretta Lynn in the 1970s, LeAnn Rimes in the 1990s, Kacey Musgraves in the 2010s, to name but a few. And let’s not forget the biggest female star in the world right now, Taylor Swift.
