ジェームス・テイラーのPMCで見つけた！エルヴィス・プレスリー「The ’68 Comeback」

もちろんエルヴィス・プレスリーのことは知っていた。みんなもエルヴィス・プレスリーのことを知ってますよね。「エルヴィス」だけを言ってもみんなが誰のことを話しているのか分かってる。でも、僕は最近までエルヴィスの大ヒット以外の音楽をあまり知りませんでした。そして人生で最も有名な事件や行動以外もあまり知りませんでした。
でもこの前「エルヴィス」という映画をみました。（年公開、監督はバズ・ラーマンの映画です。）この映画でエルヴィスの人生の色んな事を知りました。例えば、人類差別の時代に白人のエルヴィスは黒人と一緒に作曲、作詞、演奏することをよくしていました。そして、エルヴィスはキャリアのピークの時期になるはずの年代に音楽ではなく、映画とその音楽に集中していました。
この理由として、このレコードに興味がありました。年にエルヴィスは映画活動から音楽そして演奏の活動に戻る記念として特別のテレビ番組を収録しました。「ザ・カムバック・スペシャル」という名前を付けました。年の映画の後半は「ザ・カムバック・スペシャル」についてたくさんのドラマがあります。
このレコードは少し不思議なところもあります。メンフィス・キングというレコード会社から発売しましたが、このレコード会社は他のレコードを一つも出していないのです。インターネットで調べたら、ブートレッグかなと思います。そして、テレビ番組に放送されたパフォーマンスがなくて、リハーサルだけのセッションもあります。
ということで、残念ながらこのレコードは「ザ・カムバック・スペシャル」のクライマックスがありません。そのクライマックスにエルヴィスは黒い壁の前に白いスーツを着て、「明日への願い」を歌っています。手元にはなくても、このレコードを聴いて、映画を見て、そしてで見られる「ザ・カムバック・スペシャル」を検索して、エルヴィスのことをもっと知るようになるのはおすすめです。

Elvis Presley – ‘The ’68 Comeback’ (1976)
Of course I’d heard of Elvis Presley; everyone has heard of Elvis Presley. He’s so famous you only need to use his first name. And of course I knew what he sounded like when he talked, because even when I was a child – which was a long time after he died – people would still regularly do impressions of him. But aside from a few of his biggest hits, I wasn’t really familiar with much of his music. And apart from the basic facts: his hip swinging dance style was controversial; he lived in Graceland; he did a residency in Las Vegas near the end of his life; I didn’t know much about the details of his life.
But not long ago I saw the 2022 film ‘Elvis’, a biopic of his life directed by Baz Luhrmann, and not only did I learn about how open minded he was when it came to working with and appreciating Black musicians, at a time and a place of racial segregation, but I also learned that a large portion of his life and career – most of the 1960s – was spent focused on films and the music for them, rather than making albums for albums’ sake.
That’s why this record interested me. It’s a partial recording of the television special that Elvis made in 1968, which I had vaguely heard of but knew very little about until seeing the biopic. The Comeback Special forms an important part of the second half of the film. This record is a strange one though, because it appears to be the only record released on the Memphis King label, and searching online suggests that it’s a bootleg. Also, it doesn’t include any of the takes that were on the original television broadcast, but the rehearsal sessions instead.
Unfortunately, that means the record doesn’t feature the climactic moment of the Comeback Special: Elvis’ spine-tingling performance of ‘If I Can Dream’, which for the broadcast he sang in front of a black background with his name in bright lights, wearing a white suit. I recommend the biopic, the video of Elvis on the Comeback Special, and this record for a deeper insight into the music and life of the iconic performer.
