Kate Bush（ケイト・ブッシュ）「Hounds of Love（愛のかたち）」（1985年）
ケイト・ブッシュはイギリスの音楽の偉大な女性アーティストです。他のアーティストへの影響はケイト・ブッシュの音楽のおかげだけではなく、彼女の性格も影響があると思います。ケイト・ブッシュのデビュー曲、「嵐が丘」（年）が英国チャートでナンバーワンになったのは、歴史初、女性アーティストが自分で作詞作曲をした楽曲のナンバーワンでした。デビューアルバム、『天使と小悪魔』（年）のリリースと同時に公演を開きましたが、それ以来は公演はせず、スタジオで収録するだけのアーティストになりました。
「愛のかたち」はケイト・ブッシュの作目のアルバムです。デビューから年たってこの時期は自分がやりたい事をやるアーティストだと思われていました。このアルバムもそうでした。
このアルバムのサイド１とサイドは両方ともに題があります。サイドは「」で、曲のうちにつのヒット曲があります：「神秘の丘」、「大空」、「クラウドバスティング」とタイトルトラックの「愛のかたち」です。（ちなみに、インディーズのバンド、ザ・フューチャーヘッズが年にとてもいい「愛のかたち」のカバーを出した。）サイドのつのヒット曲はすべて面白いです。なぜかというと、曲と曲はまったく同じジャンルやスタイルではありませんから、リリースから年たっても興味深いのです。
それにしても、「クラウドバスティング」を聴くと少しサイドで何があるかが分かってくるかもしれません。サイドは「」の題があります。サイドに曲があります。そして、テーマがあります。このテーマは夜中に海の上に浮かんでいる女の人の話です。この話を音楽にするために、ブッシュは色んなジャンルや楽器やボーカルのテクニックを使います。「」を聴くと、リスナーがブッシュと一緒に忘れられない旅に行きます。
年にリリースのとき、「神秘の丘」はチャートでナンバー３になりました。年にネットフリックスのシリーズ、「ストレンジャー・シングス」に使われていて、数百万人がストリーミングで「神秘の丘」を聴きました。結果は初めてでリリース、そしてチャートでナンバーワンになりました。これでケイト・ブッシュは回目のナンバーワンと回目のナンバーワンのもっとも長い間（年間）の新記録ができました。

Kate Bush – ‘Hounds of Love’ (1985)
Kate Bush is by far one of the most influential female singers in British music. That’s not just because of her music, which is both memorable and unusual, but because of her character. Her first single, ‘Wuthering Heights’, reached number 1 on the UK Singles chart in 1978, which made her the first woman to have a number 1 single that she had written herself. Bush toured briefly in support of her debut album, but decided after that to focus on recording and releasing music without touring.
‘The Hounds of Love’ is Bush’s fifth album. By this stage of her career, Bush was already well-established as an artist who would do things her own way, and that is evident on this album too.
The first side of the album, known as ‘Hounds of Love’, features four hit singles (out of the five songs on that side!): ‘Running Up That Hill (A Deal with God)’, ‘The Big Sky’, ‘Cloudbusting’, and the title track itself. (Incidentally, people of my age might be familiar with the excellent cover of ‘The Hounds of Love’ by the indie group the Futureheads from 2005.) But even among these four singles, there’s an eclectic mix of musical styles and influences that you can hear – none of the songs sounds the same, and there’s not really a sense of a typical “Kate Bush song” or “Kate Bush style”, which is refreshing even 40 years from release.
Stylistically, ‘Cloudbusting’ hints at what’s to come on side two of the album, which is seven songs in a suite known as ‘The Ninth Wave’. In these songs, Bush again uses a variety of styles, instruments, machines, and vocal techniques to tell the story of a woman drifting along on the sea at night. Bush’s music and vocals lead the listener on a transformative journey that is unsettling, comforting, and memorable.
‘Running Up That Hill (A Deal with God)’ got to number 3 on release in 1985. It was featured in the 2022 Netflix series Stranger Things, which prompted millions of viewers to stream the song, and a first-ever CD release of the single. It reached number 1 in the UK in 2022, meaning Kate Bush set a new record for the longest gap between number 1 singles: 37 years between ‘Wuthering Heights’ and ‘Running Up That Hill (A Deal with God)’.
