Donna Summer（ドナ・サマー）「Hot Stuff（ホット・スタッフ）」（1979年）

ドナ・サマーはディスコ音楽の大スターでした。そして、「ホット・スタッフ」は彼女のとても有名なヒット曲です。この曲のプロデューサーはイギリス人のピート・ベロッテとイタリア人のジョルジオ・モロダーでした。モロダーはディスコ音楽とエレクトリック・ダンス・ミュージックの父と呼ばれ、1970年代からモーグ・シンセサイザーを使っていました。ドナ・サマーの1977年のヒットシングル「アイ・フィール・ラブ」のポロデューサーと作曲者はベロッテとモロダー。

1979年にリリースされた「ホット・スタッフ」はヒットしました。そして、1997年にもう一度ヒットしました。そのきっかけはイギリスの映画「ザ・フル・モンティー」のオリジナルサウンドトラックに使われていたからです。「ザ・フル・モンティー」はイギリス・シェフィールド市にスチール工場から解雇された男たちの話です。仕事がないからお金がなくて、お金が欲しいから自分たちでストリップショーをすることにしました。ストリップショーの練習と本番に色んな曲を使って、そのうちにドナ・サマーの「ホット・スタッフ」があります。

映画の途中に可笑しいシーンがあります。失業給付をもらうために男たちが並んでいるとき、ラジオで「ホット・スタッフ」が流れてくる。男たちは思わずに音楽に合わせて頭をうなずいて、足を踏み鳴らして、そしてストリップショーをするつもりでお尻を動かしたりします。映画のリリースの1年後、当時チャールズ皇太子（現在チャールズ国王）は50歳を祝うためにイギリス全国ツアーをしていました。ある日、チャールズ皇太子は映画の俳優の2人と郵便局で並んでいて、一緒に同じダンスの動きを笑いながらしました。

Donna Summer – ‘Hot Stuff’ (1979)

Donna Summer is known as one of the biggest stars of disco music, and ‘Hot Stuff’ is one of her best-known songs. It was co-produced by Pete Bellotte and Giorgio Moroder, the Italian producer who helped launch disco and electronic dance music (EDM) in the 1970s. Summer and Moroder first worked together on Summer’s single ‘I Feel Love’ (1977), and Moroder was an early adopter of the Moog synthesiser, which he used extensively on that song.

‘Hot Stuff’ was a hit on release in 1979, but found a new lease of life when it was used in the 1997 film, ‘The Full Monty’, and included on the soundtrack album. The film is the story of a group of men who are made redundant from their jobs in the steel industry in Sheffield, and to make money, they decide to put on a striptease show. ‘Hot Stuff’ is one of the songs they practice their striptease to, and there’s an amusing scene in the film where the characters are waiting in a queue at the unemployment office when the song comes on the radio. They all unconsciously start tapping their toes, nodding their heads, and then doing some of their striptease dance moves like the hip thrust in time with the song. The following year, Prince (now King) Charles, copied the scene when he was standing in line with a couple of actors from the film at a post office on a tour of the country to celebrate his 50th birthday.

‘The Full Monty’ was one of the most critically acclaimed and popular British films of the 1990s, and its soundtrack was a significant factor in its popularity. ‘Hot Stuff’ is a major part of that. You should check out the film and the soundtrack album too.
