BONNIE TYLER（ボニー・タイラー）　「FASTER THAN THE SPEED OF NIGHT（スピード・オヴ・ナイト）」（1983年）

ジム・スタインマンの作曲のおかげでミート・ローフの大ブレイクになった1977年の「地獄のロック・ライダー」がリリースされた後に2人が喧嘩をしてしまった。ジム・スタインマンは曲のアイディアをまだ山ほどあったから、他のコラボできる歌手を探していました。

同時期、歌手のボニー・タイラーは4枚目のアルバムをリリースしましたが、だんだん売れなくなってきたし、リリースをしている音楽に不満が増えてきてから、新しいレコード会社とプロデューサーを探していました。

ジム・スタインマンとボニー・タイラーは会って一緒にアルバムを作ることにしました。結果はこのアルバム、1983年の「スピード・オヴ・ナイト」でした。まず、ジム・スタインマンはボニー・タイラーにカバーをする曲のリストをあげました。選んだ曲はすべてボニー・タイラーの強い歌声を見せるための曲でした。その内の1曲はクリーデンス・クリアウォーター・リヴァイヴァルの「雨を見たかい」でした。もう一つはボニー・タイラーの最も有名になる曲でした：「愛のかげり」。リリースのときに大ヒットになって、今でもよくラジオやテレビで流れる曲です。そして、世界中の歴史最大にストリーミングした曲のランキングに上位に入っています。「愛のかげり」のおかげでボニー・タイラーは再びに売れるアーティストになりました。

ジム・スタインマンは誰のために「愛のかげり」を作曲したのかは少しミステリーです。ミート・ローフは自分のための曲だったが喧嘩後にジム・スタインマンは収録する許可を出してくれなかったと言いました。ジム・スタインマンはボニー・タイラーの強い歌声を生で聞いた後に彼女のために作曲したと言いました。

このミステリーに関係がある人、2人はもう亡くなりましたから、私たちは実話を分かることはできないと思いますが、ボニー・タイラーのバージョンを楽しみながら、もしミート・ローフは1980年代前半に収録したらと想像するのも楽しいです。

Bonnie Tyler – ‘Faster Than the Speed of Night’ (1983)

After his collaboration with Meat Loaf gave the singer his big break with ‘Bat out of Hell’ in 1977, there was a falling out that left Jim Steinman casting around for someone else to work with. He and Meat Loaf had fallen out, but Steinman still had plenty of ideas for songs and musicals.

At the same time, Bonnie Tyler had released four albums but was experiencing less and less commercial success and satisfaction with the music she was releasing. She was looking for a new record label and producer.

Steinman and Tyler met and began a collaboration that would result in this album, ‘Faster Than the Speed of Night’. Steinman presented Tyler with a selection of songs to cover, choosing ones that would best show off her powerful voice. One of them is the opening track, ‘Have You Ever Seen the Rain?’, originally by Creedence Clearwater Revival. Steinman also gave her the song that she would become best known for: ‘Total Eclipse of the Heart’. The song was a huge hit on release and even now is incredibly popular and heard regularly on radio and television. It’s also among the most-streamed songs. ‘Total Eclipse of the Heart’ would rejuvenate Tyler’s career and lead to her reinvention as a singer known for belting out power ballads.

There’s some dispute about who the song was originally intended for. Meat Loaf claimed that Steinman wrote it for him but then refused him permission to record it after their falling out. Steinman said he wrote it specifically for Tyler, while Tyler has said that Steinman told her he finished it after agreeing to work with her and hearing her powerful voice.

Since two of the people involved in the story are now dead, we’ll never know what really happened. But it’s interesting to imagine what an early ‘80s Meat Loaf recording of ‘Total Eclipse of the Heart’ would’ve been like, just as we enjoy Tyler’s iconic version.
