「THE HARDER THEY COME」オリジナルサウンドトラック（1972年）

このレコードは映画「ハーダー・ゼイ・カム」のオリジナルサウンドトラックです。映画の主演はレゲエ歌手のジミー・クリフでした。そして、サウンドトラックアルバムにジミー・クリフの曲がたくさん収録されています。アルバム内の最も有名な曲はタイトルトラックの「ザ・ハーダー・ゼイ・カム」でした。この曲は色んなアーティストがカバーをした曲です。僕は初めて聞いたのは、僕のお父さんが持っていたマッドネスのライブのカセット（年リリース）でした。小さい頃によく車で聞いていました。それから、ジョー・ストラマー＆ザ・メスカレロスの最後のアルバム、「ストリートコア」（年）の日本盤のボーナストラックの一つが「ザ・ハーダー・ゼイ・カム」のライブカバーでした。

「ハーダー・ゼイ・カム」の映画とサウンドトラックはイギリスでレゲエ音楽の大ブームを生みました。そのおかげでメインストリームに人気になって、チャートの上位までにレゲエのシングルやアルバムがチャートインすることが出来ました。「ハーダー・ゼイ・カム」のオリジナルサウンドトラックのアーティストと曲は年代と年代に色んなアーティストに影響を与えました。僕はこのレコードのたくさんの曲（例えば「ザ・ハーダー・ゼイ・カム」と「バビロンの河」）を知るきっかけは他のアーティストのバージョンです。

実はこのレコードにあるジミー・クリフの曲はタイトルトラック以外は全部古い曲でした。他に有名な曲はジミー・クリフの「」（年にのカバーでヒットでした）とザ・メイタルズの「プレッシャー・ドロップ」（年にザ・クラッシュと年にザ・スペシャルズがカバーした）です。

でも最も有名なカバーは年にボニーがリリースした「バビロンの河」でした。今でもイギリスチャート史でもっとも売れているトップ曲に入っています。

ジミー・クリフは年月に亡くなりました。「ハーダー・ゼイ・カム」のオリジナルサウンドトラックは過去年間にわたり彼のポピュラー音楽への影響を証明する作品で彼の音楽的遺産を象徴する重要な一作といえるでしょう

Various Artists – ‘The Harder They Come’ OST (1972)

This is the soundtrack to the film, ‘The Harder They Come’, which starred Jimmy Cliff and featured his songs prominently on the accompanying album. The most famous of Cliff’s songs is the title track, which has been covered so many times. I first heard it on a Madness cassette that my Dad had and we used to listen to in the car when I was a young boy, a live recording of their Madstock concert in 1992. There’s also a live cover as a bonus track on the Japanese release of the Joe Strummer and the Mescaleros album ‘Streetcore’ (2003).

The film and the soundtrack to ‘The Harder They Come’ were a breakthrough for reggae music in the UK, and a catalyst for the genre to gain mainstream popularity and chart success. Artists and songs from this soundtrack album went on to influence a lot of musicians throughout the 1970s and 1980s (and onwards), as seen by the well-known covers by famous groups. Actually, I know three of the songs (‘The Harder They Come’, ‘Many Rivers to Cross’, ‘Rivers of Babylon’) because of versions performed by other artists.

Only one of the Jimmy Cliff songs on the soundtrack (the title track) was recorded specifically for the film, with older recordings used too. One of them, ‘You Can Get It If You Really Want’, is still well-known today.

Other well-known songs on the soundtrack include Cliff’s ‘Many Rivers to Cross’, which was a hit when covered by UB40 in 1983, and ‘Pressure Drop’ by the Maytals, which was later covered by the Clash in 1980 and the Specials in 1996, among many others.

But the most successful cover of a song from the soundtrack to ‘The Harder They Come’ is ‘Rivers of Babylon’ by the Melodians, which was covered by Boney M in 1978 and is one of the top 7 biggest selling singles of all time in the United Kingdom.

Jimmy Cliff died in November 2025. The soundtrack to ‘The Harder They Come’ serves as a testament to his influence on popular music over the last 50 years.
