DONOVAN（ドノヴァン）「A GIFT FROM A FLOWER TO A GARDEN（ドノヴァンの贈り物/夢の花園より）」（1967年）
ドノヴァンは「メロー・イエロー」という曲が大ヒットしましたが、1960年代後半になると有名なミュージシャンという生活と大麻使用により逮捕されたことでストレスが大きくなりました。

ですから、イギリス・スコットランドのヘブリディーズ諸島に逃げたドノヴァンは静かな生活をしました。当時の生活の影響はこのアルバムにありました。アルバム名は「ドノヴァンの贈り物/夢の花園より」です。1967年にリリースされたダブルアルバムです。このダブルアルバムのコンセプトは面白いです。一つのアルバムは大人向け、もう一つは子供向けです。

大人向けのアルバムのタイトルは「ウェア・ユア・ラヴ・ライク・ヘヴン」です。このレコードは若くて将来に親になる大人向けの曲です。実はドノヴァンは子供向けのアルバムを収録したあとにこの大人向けのアルバムを作曲して、収録しました。

子供向けのレコードのタイトルは「フォー・リトル・ワンズ」です。このレコードの曲は子供向けですが、簡単な曲やバカみたいな曲ではなく、こどもが好きそうな童話や自然やミステリーについてのドノヴァンの作曲です。昔からあるイングリッシュ・フォーク音楽の伝説にピッタリです。

ヘブリディーズ諸島の影響はドノヴァンの音楽だけではありませんした。ドノヴァンは三つの島を買いました。そして、娘にヘブリディーズ諸島の一つの島の名前、「スカイ」を付けました。

Donovan – ‘A Gift from a Flower to a Garden’ (1967)

Donovan had a huge hit with Mellow Yellow but arrests for drug possession and his commercial success meant he was feeling overwhelmed by the second half of the 1960s.

Donovan escaped to Skye, an island in the Inner Hebrides off the coast of Scotland, and lived an isolated existence for a while. That period of this life influenced the feel of this double album, ‘A Gift from a Flower to a Garden’, which was released in 1967. It’s an interesting concept, as one album is for adults and one for children.

The adult record is titled Wear Your Love Like Heaven. The concept for this record is that the songs are aimed at young adults who might become parents. Donovan actually wrote and recorded this half of the double album after he’d completed the children’s album.

The children’s record is titled For Little Ones. What’s clever about this record, in my opinion, is that it’s not simply an album of nursery rhymes that children would already know, nor is it a collection of silly or simplistic songs that talk down to children. Rather, it’s a collection of songs that would appeal to children’s interest in fairy tales, nature, and mystery. It fits very well in the long tradition of English folk music.

The influence of the Hebrides on Donovan extended beyond his music. He actually purchased several islands in the Hebrides – Islay, Mingay, and Clett – and even named his daughter Ione Skye.
