この曲のバンド名、曲名、そして歌詞を知る何年前にメロディーを知っていました。ちょっとおかしいですよね。説明します。

僕はサッカーが大好きです。応援しているクラブはJ3リーグのツエーゲン金沢です。日本のサッカーのサポーター文化の面白いところは、全クラブのサポーターは選手のスキル、年齢、出場時間に関係なく、全選手のチャントや歌を作ります。

僕はツエーゲン金沢の試合を始めて見に行った頃、金子昌広という選手がいました。金子選手の歌は凄くキャッチーで、2021年に移籍して別のクラブでプレーしているけど今でも僕は彼の歌を時々歌います。

数年前、NHKのBSチャネルの平日毎朝早い時間に1960年代から1980年代のイギリスとヨーロッパの音楽番組を放送していました。僕は収録して楽しく見ていました。知っているアーティストや曲がいっぱい、そして時々見たことがある演奏もありました。

ある日、プリミティヴズというバンドの「クラッシュ」の演奏が出てきました。バンドも曲も知らなかったと思ったけど、曲のサビ（「don’t slow down you’re gonna crash」）を聞いたとたん、僕の頭の中で「カネコマサヒロー」が勝手にながれました。

サッカーって面白いですね。

The Primitives – Crash (1988)

I knew this song for a long time before I knew the artist, the song title, or even any of the actual lyrics. I know that sounds strange, so let me explain.

I like football, and I support Zweigen Kanazawa, who currently play in the third division of the J.League. One of the interesting aspects of supporter culture in Japanese football is that every club creates a designated song or chant for every player, regardless of their experience or ability or how many minutes they actually play.

Back when I started going to watch Kanazawa, we had an attacker called Masahiro Kaneko. His song was very catchy – he left the club a few years ago but every now and then I still catch myself singing his name – but I didn’t recognise the tune.

A few years ago, NHK’s BS cable channel used to show compilations of live music performances from British and European programmes, ranging from the 1960s to the 1980s, early every weekday morning. I recorded them for a while and enjoyed watching artists and songs I recognised and even, in a few instances, actual performances I’d seen on TV before.

Then, one day, there was a performance of ‘Crash’ by the Primitives. I didn’t know the band or the song – or so I thought. But as soon as they got to the chorus – “don’t slow down you’re gonna crash” – my brain sang, “Kaneko Masahiro”!

Football, eh?!
