パースエージョンズ　「Street Corner Symphony（ストリート・コーナー・シンフォニー）」（1971年）

パースエージョンズは1960年代ニューヨークの道で歌っていたアカペラグループでした。有名なミュージシャンのフランク・ザッパが見つけて、このきっかけで1960年代後半にデビューアルバムをリリースできました。

バンドの誕生に思い出すため、サードアルバムのタイトルは「ストリート・コーナー・シンフォニー」です。このアルバムはソウル音楽の色んな名曲のアカペラカバーがあります。例えば、カーティス・メイフィールドの「ピープル・ゲット・レディ」。でも、アルバムの中心はテンプテーションズの「アイ・クッド・ネバー・ラヴ・アナザー」、そしてそのすぐあとにテンプテーションズの3曲のメドレー：「ドント・ルック・バック」「ランナウェイ・チャイルド」、「クラウド・ナイン」。

「ストリート・コーナー・シンフォニー」の2曲目はジョニー・バトラーの「グッド・タイムズ」のカバーです。この曲は2017年のリリースされたカナダのロックバンドのベアネイキッド・レディースとのコラボアルバム、「レディース＆ジェントルメン」にもあります。このアルバムは両方のバンドがベアネイキッド・レディースの14曲と「グッド・タイムズ」を新しく収録しました。

ですから、僕はベアネイキッド・レディースのおかげで2017年にパースエージョンズを初めて聞きました。

The Persuasions – Street Corner Symphony (1971)

The Persuasions had been around a very long time before they came to my attention. An a capella group that formed in the early 1960s and used to sing on the streets, they released their first album at the end of that decade after being noticed by Frank Zappa, who gave their career an early boost.

The title of their third album, ‘Street Corner Symphony’, is a direct reference to their origins as street singers and an album of covers of well-known songs, with a focus on soul music. There’s a cover of Curtis Mayfield’s ‘People Get Ready’, but arguably the centrepiece of the album is a selection of covers of Temptations songs: ‘I Could Never Love Another (After Loving You)’ is followed by a medley called ‘Tempts Jam’ comprising ‘Don’t Look Back, Runaway Child’, ‘Running Wild’, and ‘Cloud Nine’.

Track two of Street Corner Symphony, ‘Good Times’, is a cover of a song by Jonny Butler. It also features on the Persuasions’ 2017 album recorded with Canadian rock band Barenaked Ladies. That album features the two bands performing a new version of ‘Good Times’ along with 14 Barenaked Ladies songs, including some of their biggest hits, fan favourites, newer songs, and deep cuts.

So it was thanks to Barenaked Ladies in 2017 that I discovered the Persuasions.
