スウェード「Trash(トラッシュ)」(1996年)

Suede – Trash (1996)
Suede are a guitar band from London that were first active during the 1990s and as a result were lumped in with other guitar bands that formed the Britpop scene. However, like Pulp, Suede were different from the big bands like Oasis and Blur, partly in terms of the music they made and released, and partly in terms of their aesthetic. They seemed somehow artier, especially compared to Oasis.
The creative force behind Suede in the early years were singer Brett Anderson and guitarist Bernard Butler, who formed a songwriting partnership. Butler left the band in 1994, prior to the release of this song, ‘Trash’, and the album it’s taken from (‘Coming Up’).
‘Trash’ was the first single from ‘Coming Up’, which was the first album without Butler. Suede fans were worried before the single’s release whether the band would survive without Butler working with Anderson, but ‘Trash’ went to number 3 in the UK singles chart and was Suede’s biggest selling single, and was followed by four more top 10 singles from the same album.
It’s a catchy song Anderson later explained that it’s about Suede, about the experience of being in the band and about the band’s fans, who were happy to be different from so much of the Britpop scene. ‘Coming Up’ was Suede’s most successful album, but subsequent records saw diminishing returns, and they broke up in 2003. Anderson and Butler formed a new band called the Tears in 2004 but broke up again two years later.
Suede reformed in 2010 and actually came to Japan the following year. They came back again in November 2023 as part of a double-bill world tour with Manic Street Preachers, where the bands would alternate who went on stage first from night to night.
