THE VERVE（ザ・ヴァーヴ） 「BITTER SWEET SYMPHONY（ビター・スウィート・シンフォニー）」 （1997年）
「ビター・スウィート・シンフォニー」はザ・ヴァーヴの最も有名な曲です。1997年7月リリースされて、英国チャートで2位になりました。今でもよく聞きます。
「ビター・スウィート・シンフォニー」は長く人気がある理由の一つはバイオリンのメロディです。しかしこのメロディはザ・ヴァーヴにとって残念がことがありました。ローリングストーンズの曲、「ラスト・タイム」からのサンプルでした。ザ・ヴァーヴのレコード会社はローリングストーンズのレコード会社からサンプルを使う許可を得ましたが、ローリングストーンズの元マネージャー アレン・クラインは使用できないと言いました。その結果、「ビター・スウィート・シンフォニー」はザ・ヴァーヴのリチャード・アシュクロフトが作曲ではなく、ミック・ジャガーとキース・リチャーズが作曲になりました。それで、ジャガーとリチャーズは全てのロイヤリティをもらって、アシュクロフトはただ千ドルをもらっただけでした。
チャートで2位まで上がって、そして1997年から2019年までよくラジオやテレビやCMで使われている「ビター・スウィート・シンフォニー」はジャガーとリチャーズに約5百万ドルの価値があると言われていました。アレン・クラインは2009年に亡くなって、2019年にアシュクロフトはクラインの息子さんと連絡を取りました。その二人はジャガーとリチャーズとも連絡を取って、やっとアシュクロフトに「ビター・スウィート・シンフォニー」のロイヤリティをアシュクロフトに入るよう契約をしました。
これでとても長い作曲の喧嘩が終わりました。

The Verve – ‘Bitter Sweet Symphony’ (1997)
‘Bitter Sweet Symphony’ is the Verve’s best known song. Released in June 1997, it went to number 2 on the UK singles chart and helped the success of the album it came from, ‘Urban Hymns’.
The reason for the song’s success and lasting popularity is probably the distinctive violin melody. Unfortunately for the Verve, and especially songwriter Richard Ashcroft, that violin melody was a sample from a 1965 Rolling Stones song, ‘The Last Time’. The Verve’s record label gained permission to use the sample from the Rolling Stones’ label, but not from their manager, Allen Klein, who refused. This meant that ‘Bitter Sweet Symphony’ was credited as being written by Mick Jagger and Keith Richards and 100% of the royalties from the song went to them – none to Ashcroft, who received a token $1,000.
Bearing in mind the song’s chart success, radio airplay, use on television and in advertising, by 2019 ‘Bitter Sweet Symphony’ was estimated to have earned approximately $5 million. Allen Klein died in 2009, and Ashcroft initiated contact with his son in 2019. After negotiations which also involved Jagger and Richards, the Rolling Stones members agreed to transfer the songwriting credit and royalties to Ashcroft.
This ended the long-running dispute over an incredibly catchy sample in a hugely successful song.

TALKING HEADS （トーキング・ヘッズ） 「STOP MAKING SENSE（ストップ・メイキング・センス）」 （1984年）
「ストップ・メイキング・センス」はジョナサン・デム作のトーキング・ヘッズのコンサート映画のオリジナルサウンドトラックです。ジョナサン・デムは他のコンサート映画を作りました。ニール・ヤングのコンサート映画を3つ作って、全部面白いですが、一番良いと思われているのは「ストップ・メイキング・センス」です。
このレコードの音楽にとって、実はそんなに特別な演奏ではないかなと思います。でも、トーキング・ヘッズは素晴らしい演奏ばかりのバンドだったから、聴くと面白いです。9曲の中、ヒット曲はたくさんあります：「サイコ・キラー」、「テイク・ミー・トゥ・ザ・リヴァー」、「ライフ」、「ワンス・イン・ア・ライフタイム」、「バーニング・ダウン・ザ・ハウス」。
しかし、このレコードを聴くと、映画が有名になった理由が分からないままですが、ボーカリストのデヴィッド・バーンの大きすぎるスーツはとても有名で、今でも色んなアーティストの影響があって、そして色んなアーティストはオマージュをします。例えば、2018年にイギリスのバンドThe 1975がリリースしたシングル「イッツ・ノット・リヴィング (イフ・イッツ・ノット・ウィズ・ユー)」のミュージックビデオにボーカリストは夢の中でデヴィッド・バーンのでっかいスーツを着て演奏しているオマージュがあります。
「ストップ・メイキング・センス」は多くに人から最も良いコンサート映画だと思われています。2023年にIMAXの映画館で再リリースされました。同時にオリジナルサウンドトラックで初めてコンサートをフルレングス載せて、再リリースされました。

Talking Heads – ‘Stop Making Sense’ (1984)
‘Stop Making Sense’ is the soundtrack to a concert film about Talking Heads, directed by Jonathan Demme. Demme has directed 3 concert films about Neil Young, but his most acclaimed concert film is ‘Stop Making Sense’.
In terms of the musical performance, it’s nothing out of the ordinary, insofar as it’s Talking Heads being a very good live band. Several of their big hits are included: ‘Psycho Killer’, ‘Take Me to the River’, ‘Life During Wartime’, ‘Once in a Lifetime’, ‘Burning Down the House’.
What you don’t get from the record is what made the film iconic: David Byrne’s oversized suit. The suit is so iconic, in fact, that it even exerts an influence over artists now. The video for British band the 1975’s (very catchy) 2018 single, ‘It’s Not Living (If It’s Not With You)’, is an homage to ‘Stop Making Sense’ that even includes a dream sequence in which the singer appears onstage in the same oversized suit worn by Byrne in ‘Stop Making Sense’.
‘Stop Making Sense’ is widely regarded as one of the greatest concert films ever made. It was rereleased in IMAX cinemas in late 2023, as was the soundtrack album, with the full concert included for the first time.

Shirley Collins and the Albion Country Band（シャーリー・コリンズ&アルビオン・バンド
）「No Roses（ノー・ローゼズ）」（1971年）
シャーリー・コリンズは1960年代後半から1970年代前半にフォークソングブームで有名になりました。しかし、実は1950年代後半からフォーク音楽の中で活動していました、そして音楽民族学者のアラン・ローマックスと一緒にアメリカへ行きました。
「ノー・ローゼズ」はシャーリー・コリンズとアルビオン・バンドの初めてのコラボのアルバムでした。コリンズは当時の夫のアシュリー・ハッチングスとこのバンドを結成しました。ハッチングスは元フェアポート・コンベンションとスティールアイ・スパンの創設メンバーだったので、イギリスのフォーク音楽のとても偉いひとでした。コリンズは「ノー・ローゼズ」の前にソロアルバムや姉のドリーとのコラボアルバムをリリースしました。
ドリー・コリンズとハッチングスは「ノー・ローゼズ」にも出演します。フェアポート・コンベンションのたくさんのメンバーも出演します。実は、収録している間に、色んな人がいきなりスタジオに来て、そして演奏を誘われ、このアルバムには27人のミュージシャンが演奏しています。そのおかげで、このアルバムに強く「コラボ」という雰囲気が感じられます。それは当時のイギリスのフォーク音楽によくありました。
「ノー・ローゼズ」の後にもシャーリー・コリンズはアルビオン・バンドとアシュリー・ハッチングスと作曲、収録、アルバムを出すことにしました。1970年代後半にシャーリー・コリンズとアシュリー・ハッチングスは離婚をして、コリンズは悲しくて歌えなくなりました。ディスフォニアという病気で歌声が出なくなりました。

Shirley Collins and the Albion Country Band – ‘No Roses’ (1971)
Shirley Collins came to prominence in the late 1960s and early 1970s as part of what was known as the folk revival. However, she had been an active recording artist and immersed in folk music since the late 1950s, as she accompanied the folk collector Alan Lomax on a trip to the southern states of the USA.
‘No Roses’ (1971) was Collins’ first album with the Albion Country Band, who she formed with her then-husband Ashley Hutchings. Hutchings was hugely influential in the British folk scene, as a founding member of both Fairport Convention and Steeleye Span. Prior to ‘No Roses’, Collins had released solo albums and albums with her sister, Dolly.
Dolly Collins appears on ‘No Roses’, along with several members of Fairport Convention, and Hutchings. In fact, 27 different musicians appear on the album, because they would just turn up at the studio and were invited to play. As such, there’s an eclectic feel to the album, but also an atmosphere of collaboration that was a hallmark of English folk music during that era.
Shirley Collins continued to record with Hutchings and various incarnations of the Albion Band under different names, until their divorce in the late 1970s, the pain of which left Collins unable to sing. She was actually experiencing an illness called dysphonia, which she talked more about in an emotional appearance on the BBC radio programme ‘Desert Island Discs’.
After several decades spent mostly away from the music industry, in 2016 Collins made a surprise return to recording and released a new album. A film about her life was released in 2017. Collins is now actively recording and releasing new music again.

Ash（アッシュ）「Shining Light/Burn Baby Burn（シャイニング・ライト/バーン・ベイビー・バーン）」（2001年）
このレコードは日本の特別盤で北アイルランドのバンド、アッシュの2曲入りシングルです。「シャイニング・ライト」と「バーン・ベイビー・バーン」は2曲とも2001年のアルバム、「フリー・オール・エンジェルズ」からです。
1994年のEPと1996年のデビューアルバムのいいレビューを多くもらった後、アッシュのセカンドアルバムはあまり売れませんでした。セカンドアルバムの失敗はメンタル的な影響もあり、あわせてバンドのお金の問題も出てきました。
しかし、アルバム「フリー・オール・エンジェルズ」がアッシュを救うことになります。ファーストシングルは2001年1月に出した「シャイニング・ライト」、その年の4月には「バーン・ベイビー・バーン」を発売しました。そしてその後アルバムをリリースしました。人気のシングルを収録したアルバム「フリー・オール・エンジェルズ」は全英アルバムチャートで1位を獲得しました。シングルは全部で5枚出して、すべてチャートで上位になりました。
アッシュは続けて世界中で演奏をして、「フリー・オール・エンジェルズ」の後にもう二枚のアルバムを出しました（2004年と2007年）。2009年にアッシュは公式ホームページにファンへのメッセージを書きました。「インターネットの影響で、音楽の購入方法と聴き方は変わると思いますので、これからは僕たちの作曲とリリースの仕方も変わります。」というメッセージでした。当時他のアーティストも少し同じことをしていたけど、アッシュは一番に取り組んだアーティストでした。アッシュのイノベーションは、一つずつの曲をCDではなく、直接インターネット上で出すことにしました。そして、曲名の最初の文字はアルファベットのAからZにして、順番にリリースします。
「シャイニング・ライト」と「バーン・ベイビー・バーン」のおかげでとても有名になったアッシュですが、少しずつ忘れられていたとも考えられます。でも、2015年にまたアルバムの制作を再開しました。2025年10月にまたアルバムをリリースし、その際、来日公演も果たしています。

Ash – ‘Shining Light/Burn Baby Burn’ (2001)
This is a double A-side, special Japanese release from Northern Irish indie band Ash. The songs, ‘Shining Light’ and ‘Burn Baby Burn’ are both taken from their 2001 album ‘Free All Angels’.
Following a critically acclaimed EP and debut album released in 1994 and 1996 respectively, Ash’s second full-length album was a critical and commercial failure. Together with extensive touring around the world, this failure took its toll on the band mentally, emotionally, and financially.
‘Free All Angels’ rescued Ash. ‘Shining Light’, the first single from the album was released in January 2001, followed by ‘Burn Baby Burn’ in April, then the album itself. ‘Free All Angels’ went straight to number 1 on the UK album chart, and three more singles were taken from it, each charting highly.
Ash continued to tour the world extensively, and released two more conventional albums in 2004 and 2007 before taking a more innovative approach to releasing music. From 2009, Ash released individual songs on their own website, announcing presciently that they felt the internet would change the way music would be consumed by listeners. Other artists were doing this too, but not to the extent of Ash, who added a quirk in that there would be 26 songs, released in alphabetical order according to the first letter of the title.
Ash retreated from the limelight that ‘Shining Light’ and ‘Burn Baby Burn’ brought them, but they did return to traditional albums in 2015. They released their most recent album in October 2025 and toured Japan in support.

Mother Love Bone（マザー・ラヴ・ボーン）「Apple（アップル）」（1990年）
マザー・ラヴ・ボーンは3年間しか活動していなかったですが、このバンドがいなかったら、近年のアメリカ出身のとても人気のあるバンドはいないはずです。
マザー・ラヴ・ボーンは1987年にアメリカのシアトル市で結成した5人組でした。シアトル周辺でライブをして、注目されて、レコード会社と契約を結んで、1988年に初EPを出しました。その次の年にデビューアルバムの「アップル」をリリースしました。しかし、マザー・ラヴ・ボーンのデビューアルバムは結局マザー・ラヴ・ボーンのすべてのアルバムになりました。
「アップル」のリリース前に大変悲しいことがありました。1990年3月14日にシンガーのアンドリュー・ウッドは家でヘロインのオーバードーズによって、数日後に亡くなりました。その影響で「アップル」のリリースは夏まで延期されました。でも、リリース後にとてもいいレビューがたくさんありました。マザー・ラヴ・ボーンの曲は1970年代のグラム・ロックと1990年代にブームが来るグランジの橋渡しになったと思います。1980年代後半に人気があったガンズ・アンド・ローゼズのような音楽もあります。「アップル」の最初の3曲を聴くと、マザー・ラヴ・ボーンの色んなスタイルが聞こえます。そして、最後の曲、「クラウン・オヴ・ソーンズ」は一番いい曲だと思います。
アンドリュー・ウッドが死亡した後、マザー・ラヴ・ボーンは解散しました。ベーシストのジェフ・アメンとギタリストのストーン・ゴッサードは友達のクリス・コーネル（当時サウンドガーデンのシンガー）から招待されて、アンドリュー・ウッドへのトリビュートアルバムをコラボし「テンプル・オブ・ザ・ドッグ」というバンド名とアルバム名でリリースしました。収録のセッションはジェフ・アメンとストーン・ゴッサードがギタリストのマイク・マクレディとボーカリストのエディ・ヴェダーと初めて会うきっかけとなりました。その4人とドラマーのデイヴ・クルーセンとパール・ジャムというバンドを結成して、1991年に大きくヒットしたデビューアルバム、「テン」をリリースしました。
パール・ジャムは今でも新しい音楽を出したり、世界中で演奏をしています。1991年からドラマーが何回も変わっていますが、「テンプル・オブ・ザ・ドッグ」を収録していた時の4人はまだバンドメンバーです。時々ライブで「クラウン・オヴ・ソーンズ」を演奏します。今年の8月に「アップル」のリマスター版がリリースされました。

Mother Love Bone – ‘Apple’ (1990)
Mother Love Bone were a short-lived band, but without their brief and tragic existence, one of the biggest American rock bands of the last few decades would never have existed.
A five-piece band, Mother Love Bone were formed in Seattle in 1987. They quickly gained attention and plaudits for their live shows in the local area, earned a record deal and released their first EP in 1988. This was followed in 1989 by their debut – and, as it would transpire, only – album, Apple, in 1990.
Tragedy struck before this record was even released. Singer Andrew Wood was found at home on 16th March, 1990; he had overdosed on heroin. He died three days later, aged just 24. ‘Apple’ was released in the summer of 1990, several months later than planned, to critical acclaim. The album’s songs offer a bridge between glam rock of the 1970s and the grunge that would become huge in the early 1990s, as well as showing a hard rock side not unlike their contemporaries Guns N’ Roses. The opening three songs, ‘This is Shangrila’, ‘Stardog Champion’ and ‘Holy Roller’ show most of the sides of Mother Love Bone very clearly. The album closer, ‘Crown of Thorns’, is probably the strongest song on the record.
After Wood’s death, Mother Love Bone disbanded. Bassist Jeff Ament and guitarist Stone Gossard were contacted by their friend, the Soundgarden singer Chris Cornell, and invited to collaborate on a tribute album to Wood. The project was released under the name Temple of the Dog, which is a lyric from the Mother Love Bone song ‘Man of Golden Words’. The recording sessions were the first encounter between Ament, Gossard, guitarist Mike McCready, and singer Eddie Vedder. They, along with drummer Dave Krusen, would go on to form Pearl Jam, and enjoy huge success with their debut album ‘Ten’ in 1991.
Pearl Jam is still releasing music and touring, with four of the original members (there have been numerous changes of drummer). On occasion, they still play ‘Crown of Thorns’ at concerts, in memory of Andrew Wood. ‘Apple’ was remastered and re-released in August this year.
