ジェームス・テイラーのPMCでみつけた！Runrig「Once in a Lifetime」

Runrig（ランリグ）「Once in a Lifetime（ワンス・イン・ア・ライフタイム）」（1988年)

ランリグは1973年にスコットランドの西にあるヘブリディーズ諸島のスカイ島に設立されました。それから45年間活動をして、2018年に開催しました。このアルバム、「Once in a Lifetime」はランリグが頂点の時期でのライブアルバムです。ちなみにPMCにランリグのこの時期のもう2枚のアルバムがあります。

他のフォークバンドのように、ランリグは最初からよくライブをして、バンドとしての技能を磨きました。それでランリグのライブはとても人気になっていきました。このレコードを聴くと、明らかにランリグのライブは最高だと分かると思います。そして、ランリグのふるさとのヘブリディーズ諸島のスカイ島の影響も聞こえます。「Skye」は出身地へのオマージュです。それから、三つの曲はゲール語で歌っています。ヘブリディーズ諸島の一つの言語はゲール語です。最後の曲、「Loch Lomond」はスコットランドの伝統的な曲です。ランリグは長年この曲をライブの最後の曲に使っていました。

僕は初めてランリグを知ってるのは、グレート・ビッグ・シーというカナダ出身のバンドの2004年のアルバム「Something Beautiful」にランリグの「Pride of the Summer」をカバーしていたきっかけです。グレート・ビッグ・シーは曲名を「Beat the Drum」に変更して、歌詞とアレンジも少し変わりました。とてもいい曲です。

僕は昔からグレート・ビッグ・シーが好きで、ランリグは最近になって聞いていますが、ランリグをもっと聞くとグレート・ビッグ・シーへの影響が分かってきました。45年間活動しているレジェンド的なバンドに対して、それは当たり前のことでしょう。

Runrig – ‘Once in a Lifetime’ (1988)

Runrig were a Scottish band formed in 1973 on the Isle of Skye, which is in the Inner Hebrides, a group of islands off the west coast of mainland Scotland. They were active in the studio and on tour for 45 years, before playing their final shows in 2018. This live album captures Runrig at their peak, in the midst of the release of a string of successful albums, two of which are also in the PMC (‘The Cutter and the Clan’ from 1987 and ‘Searchlight’ from 1989).

Like many folk bands, Runrig honed their craft by playing live and were renowned for their superb concerts, which really comes across on ‘Once in a Lifetime’. What also shines through on this record – as with all of their work – is the band’s Hebridean roots, which clearly influenced so much of their music over their long career. The song ‘Skye’, an homage to their home island, is track 8, while there are also three songs with lyrics that are fully or partly in Gaelic (‘Chì Mi'n Geamhradh’, ‘Cnoc Na Fèille’, ‘'S Tu Mo Leannan/Nightfall on Marsco’) which is one of the languages spoken in the Hebrides. The final song on the album is ‘Loch Lomond’, a traditional Scottish song that Runrig made their own and regularly used as the final song of their concerts.

I actually came across Runrig via another folk band, Great Big Sea, who covered the Runrig song ‘Pride of the Summer’ on their 2004 album ‘Something Beautiful’. Great Big Sea renamed their version ‘Beat the Drum’ and changed the arrangement and lyrics enough to make it their own.

I’ve been listening to Great Big Sea for many years while Runrig are still fairly new to me, but the more I listen to Runrig, the more I can hear their influence in Great Big Sea’s music and live performances. Of course, with such longevity, there are bound to be plenty more bands influenced by a band like Runrig.

今月のブログは2枚のレコードについてを紹介します。2枚のレコードはステイタス・クォーのオムニバスです。1枚目の「Volume I」は1972年から1979年のシングル、そして2枚目「Volume II」は1980年から1984年のシングル、ステイタス・クォーの一番売れていた時期の曲はこの2枚のレコードにあります。

こちらのレコードにはないですが、ステイタス・クォーは最初に長いインストルメンタルがあるプログレロックを作曲していて、そして最初のヒット曲はサイケデリックポップの「Pictures of Matchstick Men」でした。しかし、ステイタス・クォーのファーストアルバムとセカンドアルバムはあまり売れてなかったので、バンドは音楽のスタイルを変えました。

その後、3枚のアルバムを作り、新しい道を進んでいたステイタス・クォーはやっと落ち着いて、自分たちに会うスタイルを見つけました。この新しいスタイルはハード・ロックとブギウギを混ぜて、キャッチーなリフを使って、覚えやすいコーラスがあるブギ・ロックでした。これはこの2枚のオムニバスで紹介しています。

僕が小さい頃、おじいちゃんのステイタス・クォーのオムニバスのカセットがありました。遊びに行った時、僕と兄のエドがこのカセットを楽しく聞いていました。そのカセットと「12 Gold Bars」には同じいい曲がたくさんあります。僕が特におすすめの曲は「Volume I」からの「Rockin’ All Over the World」、「Paper Plane」と「Whatever You Want」、そして「Volume II」からの「What You’re Proposing」、「Marguerita Time」と「The Wanderer」です。

昔からのバンド、そして昔から同じ服やヘアスタイルで少しバカにされるステイタス・クォーは1960年代から2020年代に活動していて、そして1970年代前半から1980年代後半にヒットアルバムとヒット曲をずっと出していたことで、イギリスで最も売れているバンドのランキングで上の方にいます。

Status Quo – ‘12 Gold Bars Volume I’ (1980) & ‘12 Gold Bars Volume II’ (1984)

These two 12-song compilations showcase Status Quo’s most commercially successful era. Volume I contains singles from 1972 to 1979, while Volume II covers 1980 to 1984.

Although not featured here, Status Quo began as a prog rock band playing songs with long instrumental passages, and their first big hit was a psychedelic pop-rock song, ‘Pictures of Matchstick Men’. Their first and second albums were not successful at all, failing to chart, so the band changed musical direction.

It took three more albums for Status Quo to hit their stride with their new direction, which is what you hear on these compilations: hard rock mixed with boogie woogie to create a kind of boogie rock, guitar-led, with catchy riffs and choruses that are easy to sing along to.

When I was a little boy, my grandfather had a double cassette Status Quo compilation called ‘Rockin’ All Over the Years’ (1990), which my brother and I loved to listen to when we visited. Many of the same songs are featured on ‘12 Gold Bars Volume I & II’. There are so many good tunes on these albums, but if I had to pick highlights, I’d go for ‘Rockin’ All Over the World’, ‘Paper Plane’ and ‘Whatever You Want’ from Volume I, and ‘What You’re Proposing’, ‘Marguerita Time’ and ‘The Wanderer’ from Volume II.

Status Quo have been mocked over the years for their music, which is derided by some as repetitive and simplistic, for their appearance, as they kept their long hair and pony tails into their 60s, and their clothes, as they often wore and still wear denim. But at their peak, Status Quo churned out hit singles and hit albums, both singles and albums, and thanks to their longevity and prolificacy, in terms of top 10 singles and albums, weeks spent on the charts, and sales, they are among the most successful artists of all time.

Hunters & Collectors（ハンターズ・アンド・コレクターズ）「Human Frailty（ヒューマン・フレイルティ）」 (1986年)

ハンターズ・アンド・コレクターズはオーストラリア出身のパブロックバンドです。パブロックというのは、ギターのリフが中心の、シンプルなロック音楽です。このような音楽は、お客さんがたくさん入っている狭いパブやバーで演奏するのをピッタリな音楽です。しかし、「ヒューマン・フレイルティ」はただのロックアルバムではありません。

「ヒューマン・フレイルティ」はとてもいいロックソングたっぷりなアルバムです。軽く聞くと、シンプルな曲ばっかりだと思うかもしれませんが、実は機微なところがたくさんあります。例えば、1曲目の「セイ・グッバイ」のサビで性の役割を逆にします。ソングライターのマーク・セイモアは、男性と女性両方とも歌える曲を作りたかったと語った。いろんな曲は恋の辛さを歌詞にしています。

また、「ヒューマン・フレイルティ」の一つの曲は目立ちます。これは3曲目の「スロー・ユア・アームス」です。これはバラード曲ですが、バラード曲はとても感情的です。「スロー・ユア・アームス」はそうではありません。もちろん歌詞は恋についてですが、恋は儚いという気持ちを伝える歌詞です。この曲はオーストラリアではベスト曲ランキングで上位です。実は、このアルバムにある「スロー・ユア・アームス」はハンターズ・アンド・コレクターズの3回目のバージョンです。1回目と2回目はあまりラジオやリスナーから注目されていませんでしたが、3回目は成功しました。「スロー・ユア・アームス」は他のアーテイストにも人気の曲です。マーク・セイモアの弟のニックのバンド、クラウデッド・ハウスはよくライブで演奏していて、開催する前の最後のライブもそうでした。僕と兄のエドはこの機会に「スロー・ユア・アームス」を初めて聞いて、そしてハンターズ・アンド・コレクターズを初めて知りました。クラウデッド・ハウス経由でパール・ジャムのボーカリストのエディー・ヴェダーは「スロー・ユア・アームス」を知って、時々ライブで演奏をしていました。そして、2003年オーストラリアのパース市のライブでマーク・セイモアと一緒に演奏しました。「スロー・ユア・アームス」は誰でも歌いたくなる、誰もが歌詞の気持ちの分かる曲です。

個人的に思うことですが、「ヒューマン・フレイルティ」と他のロックアルバムの違いは金管楽器です。ジャック・ハワードのトランペット、ジェレミー・スミスのフレンチホルン、マイケル・ワォーターズのトロンボーンはマーク・セイモアの曲にプラスアルファになって、ただのロックアルバムより面白くなります。

Hunters & Collectors – ‘Human Frailty’ (1986)

Hunters & Collectors are an Australian rock band, generally described as “pub rock”. What does that mean? Well, Australian pub rock refers to a type of rock that was focused on making loud rock music with heavy guitar riffs, well suited to playing in small, crowded pubs and bars. But ‘Human Frailty’ is not just a simple rock album.

There are so many good rock songs on this album, and for an album that on a surface listen sounds down and dirty and masculine, there are some surprising subtleties, not least the subversion of gender roles in rock music. This is most evident in album opener ‘Say Goodbye’, with its chorus: “you don’t make me feel like I’m a woman anymore”. Songwriter Mark Seymour said he wanted a song that men and women could sing along to, and it’s amusing to think of a room full of drunk men shouting that line at the tops of their voices. Like a lot of the songs on the album, ‘Everything’s on Fire’ is also about relationship problems, something that most people can relate to in some way.

But there’s one song on ‘Human Frailty’ that really stands out: track three, ‘Throw Your Arms Around Me’. It’s a ballad, but not a mawkish one; just an apparently simple but effective expression of love and how it is often fleeting. ‘Throw Your Arms Around Me’ is frequently rated as one of the best Australian songs ever. The version on ‘Human Frailty’ is actually the band’s third attempt at recording it, and it was this version that finally gained traction. It’s a song that brought Hunters & Collectors to a new audience, via Mark Seymour’s brother Nick’s band, Crowded House, who would often cover it in their live shows. Crowded House included it in their huge Farewell to the World concert on the steps of the Sydney Opera House in 1996, which was how my brother and I discovered the song and then Hunters & Collectors. Eddie Vedder, the lead singer of Pearl Jam, also got to know the song thanks to Crowded House, and would occasionally play it in concert – and in Perth in 2003, he did so with Mark Seymour. It’s one of those songs that has a strange ability to unite a group of people, wherever and whoever they are, to sing along.

I think what separates ‘Human Frailty’ from other rock albums for me is the horns: Jack Howard’s trumpet, Jeremy Smith’s French horn, and Michael Waters’ trombone add an extra dimension to Seymour’s songs that lift them above standard rock and help make ‘Human Frailty’ an interesting listen.

Blur（ブラー） 「End of a Century（エンド・オブ・ア・センチュリー）」（1994年)

ブラーは1990年代で最も有名なブロットポップのバンドでした。この曲、「エンド・オブ・ア・センチュリー」はヒットアルバム「パークライフ」から4曲目のシングルでした。この前の2枚のシングル、「ガールズ＆ボーイズ」と「パークライフ」は大ヒットでしたし、ブリットポップの代表曲だと思います。

チャートだけを考えると、「エンド・オブ・ア・センチュリー」は前後にリリースされたシングルの影になって、あまり注目されていませんでしたが、いい曲です。

1994年から1995年の頃、ブラーはオアシスとマスメディアが勝手に作った「バトル・オヴ・ブリットポップ」（ブリットポップの戦争）に巻き込まれてしまいました。マスメディアによると、イングランドの南部の出身のブラーと北部出身のオアシスは反対でした。1995年8月に同じ日にブラーが「カントリー・ハウス」とオアシスが「ロール・ウイズ・イット」のシングルに出した。「ロール・ウイズ・イット」はチャート2位、「カントリー・ハウス」はチャートナンバーワンで、ブラーの勝ちでした。ライバルとして、お互いにブラーとオアシスのメンバーは嫌な発言していました。でも、数年後、デーモン・アルバーンと元オアシスのノエル・ギャラガーはいろんなプロジェクトでコラボレーションをして、友達になりました。

実は、僕がこの曲を選んだ理由は歌詞の一番最初にデーモン・アルバーンは、「カーペットにアリがいっぱいだ」を歌うことです。僕は毎年この頃にアリが家に入れないように頑張っています。それは田舎の生活だよ！

Blur – ‘End of a Century’ (1994)

Blur were one of the leading bands of the Britpop scene in mid-1990s UK music. This song was the fourth single to be released from their commercially and critically successful third album, “Parklife”. Two of the preceding singles – “Girls and Boys” and “Parklife” were big hits, but more than that, they almost came to define that era of music.

“End of a Century” was less successful in terms of chart position and has always been overlooked because of the memorable songs that were released before and after, but it is still a worthy song.

At the same time, the band became embroiled in a media-manufactured “battle of Britpop” with Oasis. The two bands were presented as polar opposites: Oasis were a foul-mouthed, working class band of northerners, while Blur were from art school down south (and were also foul-mouthed). Things came to a head in August 1995, when Oasis released “Roll with It” and Blur released “Country House” on the same day. Blur won that battle, reaching number 1 as Oasis were number 2. The rivalry was at various times quite unpleasant, with members of both bands making regretful comments. Many years later, Blur’s Damon Albarn and Noel Gallagher of Oasis would become friends and collaborators on various musical projects.

But my main reason for choosing this song this month is that the opening line, “there’s ants in the carpet”, seems appropriate for the renewal of my annual battle to plug all the holes and gaps in my house to stop ants getting in. Ah, life in the countryside!

Take That（テイク・ザット） 「Back for Good（バック・フォー・グッド）」(1995年)

1990年代イギリスにいた人たちは絶対にテイク・ザットのことを知っています。大ヒット曲連続の5人組のボーイズバンドでした。1992年から1996年の間に12曲連続をイギリスのチャートにトップテン、そのうち2度、4曲連続のナンバーワンでした。

テイク・ザットのファンはほとんどが若い女性でした。ファンのテイク・ザットの愛は強くて、ビートルマニアの時代以来に見たことがないぐらいに強かったです。そして、2010年代にワン・ダイレクションもこのようなファンからの愛が強かったです。1996年にテイク・ザットが解散を発表したとき、イギリスの政府が悲しいファンのためにヘルプラインを設置しました。

開催する1年前、一人のメンバーがバンドを脱退しました。解散した後、最後までメンバーとしての4人がソロアーティストとしてあまり売れませんでしたが、先にやめたロビー・ウィリアムズがソロアーティストとして多くのヒット曲とアルバムを送り出しました。みんながこうなると思いませんでした。なぜかというと、テイク・ザットの作曲者はロビー・ウィリアムズではなく、ゲイリー・バーロウでした。

この曲、「バック・フォー・グッド」はゲイリー・バーロウの作曲の才能が垣間見える曲です。そして個人的な意見ですが、「バック・フォー・グッド」はテイク・ザットのベストシングルです。リリースする前にテレビ番組で演奏してから、凄く人気になって、レコード会社が早めに発売し、チャートのナンバーワンになりました。しかし、「バック・フォー・グッド」の特別なポイントははっきり言えません（ごめんなさい！）。メロディーかバッキングボーカルか歌詞か、何か他のボーイズバンドのバラード曲と違うのかは分からないですが、テイク・ザットのファンではない方々も、好きなテイク・ザットの曲はこれしかないと思います。

日本だけのリリースに、「バック・フォー・グッド」と以前リリースしたテイク・ザットの4曲が入っています：「シュア」、「プレイ」（2曲とも英国チャートでナンバーワン）、「いつも二人で」（英国チャートで２）と「ミリオン・ラヴ・ソングス」（英国チャートで７）。

テイク・ザットは2005年に再結成をしました。その後、最初の二つのシングルはナンバーワンになり、6回連続のナンバーワン、そして14回連続のトップテン入りを果たしています。テイク・ザットのちょっと不思議なことがあるんですけど、イギリスでずっと大人気だったが、アメリカで全く売れなかったです。でもイギリスで4人組でも、5人組でも、3人組でもアリーナツアーを完売できる、大人気のボーイズバンドです。

1990年代のたくさんのヒットの中、今でも一番いいと思う曲はやっぱり「バック・フォー・グッド」です。

Take That – ‘Back for Good’ (1995)

Anyone who was in the UK in the 1990s will be familiar with Take That: a 5-member boyband who had hit after hit in the middle of the decade, before splitting in 1996, and later reforming in 2005. When I say “hit after hit”, I’m not exaggerating: from 1992 to 1996 they had 12 consecutive top 10 singles, including two runs of four number 1s.

Their popularity among their mostly young, female fanbase was undeniable; the sort of fandom that hadn’t been seen since the days of Beatlemania and wouldn’t be seen again until One Direction in the early 2010s. So strong was the love from their fans that, when Take That announced they were breaking up in 1996, a helpline was set up by the government for inconsolable fans.

Thereafter followed a period of wilderness for the four members who’d stayed to the end. Gary Barlow and Mark Owen had largely unsuccessful attempts at solo careers, while Howard Donald and Jason Orange seemed to withdraw from the limelight. In contrast, Robbie Williams – who’d left the band in 1995 – had a hugely successful solo career, despite the fact that it was Barlow who was the songwriting force behind a large number of Take That’s hits.

This song, ‘Back for Good’, shows Barlow’s songwriting ability and I think it’s fair to say it’s probably Take That’s finest moment. It went straight into the UK chart at number 1 on release in 1995; a release that had been brought forward due to such strong demand after they’d first performed it on television. It’s hard to explain what makes ‘Back for Good’ different from bog-standard boyband ballads – is it the melody, the backing vocals, the content of the lyrics itself? I really don’t know (sorry!), but it’s probably the only Take That song that people who don’t like Take That would like.

‘Back for Good’ is followed on this Japan-only release by four of Take That’s earlier hits: ‘Sure’ (UK chart number 1), ‘Pray’ (UK chart number 1), ‘Why Can’t I Wake Up With You’ (UK chart number 2), and ‘A Million Love Songs’ (UK chart number 7).

Take That’s first two singles after reforming both went to number 1 in the UK singles chart, making it 6 consecutive chart-toppers and 14 top 10 singles in a row. What’s slightly strange about Take That and Robbie Williams’ solo career is that although they had massive success in the UK, it never transferred to the US. But in the UK, they have repeatedly sold out arena tours as a four-piece, five-piece and three-piece group since reforming.

Of all their ‘90s hits, ‘Back for Good’ is the one that has stood the test of time.

「Tango in the Night（タンゴ・イン・ザ・ナイト）」(1987年)

「タンゴ・イン・ザ・ナイト」はフリートウッド・マックのもっとも有名な5人組のラインナップが作った最後のアルバムです。その5人はミック・フリートウッド、スティーヴィー・ニックス、ジョン・マクヴィー、クリスティン・マクヴィーとリンジー・バッキンガムでした。フリートウッド・マックのキャリアーは最初のブルースロックからポップ・ロックまでの進化が大きかったです。1977年にリリースされた大ヒット曲たっぷりのアルバム「噂」も大ヒットだったので、バンドが世界のスーパースターになりました。

「噂」はたくさん売れたけど、最初のころ、バンドのファンがあまり好きじゃなかったです。そして、バンドのメンバー間の恋愛関係がドラマみたいにややこしくなってきてから、多くの人がバンドの音楽を無視しました。「噂」の次のアルバム「牙 (タスク)」（1979年）と「ミラージュ」（1982年）は「噂」に比べたらもっと実験的なアルバムだったが、あまりヒットしませんでした。そのあと、フリートウッド・マックのメンバーは別々のソロプロジェクトをやっていて、バンドのことを考えなかったらしいです。

ですから、数年間バンドの活動がなくて、5人が集まってフリートウッド・マックとしてアルバムを作るのはびっくりしました。「タンゴ・イン・ザ・ナイト」もヒット曲がたくさんあります。僕はこのアルバムがリリースされた年に生まれて、子供の頃によくラジオで「ビッグ・ラヴ」や「エヴリホエア」や「リトル・ライズ」を聞きました。今でもラジオでよく流れます。ヒット曲はラジオ・フレンドリーだから、このアルバムの他の曲は注目されないかもしれませんが、シングル曲と同じぐらい注目して聞くと面白いアルバムだと思います。

このアルバムを出した後、フリートウッド・マックはメンバーを入れ替えながらツアーを続けていました。最近僕の好きなアーティスト、ニール・フィンはギタリストとしてフリートウッド・マックに入りました。

しかし、2022年11月にクリスティン・マクヴィーがいなくなりました。2023年にインタービーでスティーヴィー・ニックスがフリートウッド・マックはもうツアーしないと話していました。「タンゴ・イン・ザ・ナイト」はフリートウッド・マックの素晴らしさが明らかに分かるアルバムです。

Fleetwood Mac – ‘Tango in the Night’ (1987)

‘Tango in the Night’ is the last album released by the “classic” Fleetwood Mac line up of Mick Fleetwood, Stevie Nicks, John McVie, Christine McVie and Lindsey Buckingham. Over their career leading up to this album, Fleetwood Mac had undergone a massive transformation from their early years as a blues group led by Peter Green into a pop-rock powerhouse. Their status in that respect was confirmed by ‘Rumours’ (1977), a huge hit on release, featuring several hit singles, which went on to become one of the biggest selling albums of all time.

Despite its commercial success, ‘Rumours’ alienated many of the band’s early fans, and they began to be dismissed by many listeners and critics as a soap opera because of the personal romantic relationships between band members. The follow ups to ‘Rumours’, ‘Tusk’ (1979) and ‘Mirage’ (1982) were more experimental and less successful, and Fleetwood Mac quietly went on the back burner, as each member went off to pursue solo projects.

‘Tango in the Night’, then, came as something of a surprise. The members of Fleetwood Mac reconvened after a gap of several years to make this album full of huge hits that I grew up hearing on the radio (I was born the year this album was released) and which are still regularly given airplay even today: songs like ‘Big Love’, ‘Everywhere’, and ‘Little Lies’. The radio-friendliness of the songs hides the fact that there is actually a lot of experimentation on ‘Tango in the Night’, so it bears repeated listens, and the non-singles are worthy of attention alongside the hit singles.

After this album Fleetwood Mac continued to tour with different combinations of bandmembers, including most recently with one of my favourite artists, Neil Finn, on guitar.

Christine McVie died in November 2022, and Stevie Nicks said in an interview in late 2023 that the band probably will not tour any more. ‘Tango in the Night’ stands as a fine example of Fleetwood Mac at their very best.

僕は大学生時代にフランス語とイタリア語を勉強していて、3年生の1年間イタリアの北の方にあるベルガモ市に留学しました。ベルガモ市はとてもいいところです。じつは二つの町に分かれています：下の町は新しくて、丘の上に城郭都市みたいな古い町があります。僕は新しい町のアパートに住んで、毎日古い町まで歩いて授業に行きました。

ベルガモ市の近くに大都市のミラノ市があるから、ミラノの方に注目されて、ベルガモはあまり注目されませんでした。ベルガモ市民は市が東に向いて、一方は西にあるミラノに向いていることを喜んでいます。

数百年前、ベルガモにオペラに才能がある方々たくさんいました。ガエターノ・ドニゼッティはベルガモ市で1797年に生まれ、1848年に亡くなりました。2009年に子供の頃に住んでいた家が公開されました。実は、ベルガモ市の古い町にあるその家の地下だけにドニゼッティの家族が住んでいました。古い町の別の場所にドニゼッティのミュージアムがあります。そのミュージアムが1906年に開館されました。そして、ベルガモ市の歌劇場はドニゼッティの名前を使って名付けられました。僕は1年間ベルガモにいた間、オペラを観に行く機会が作れなかったのはちょっと残念だなと今になって思います。

このレコードはドニゼッティ作成の有名なオペラ、「愛の妙薬」の劇です。1988年にルチアーノ・パヴァロッティが「愛の妙薬」を演奏したときに、世界記録の165回のカーテンコールをしました。このオペラはコメディーだと言われてるけど、僕はオペラがちょっと苦手です。でも、このレコードを聞くと、最高に楽しい1年間の留学を思い出す機会になります。そして、最近新聞でドニゼッティについての面白い記事を読みました。去年イギリス人の音楽学の研究者がヨーロッパのいろんなところにドニゼッティが作った楽譜をたくさん見つけました。その楽譜は一度も演奏されたことがないので、これからみんながベルガモ出身のもっとも有名な人の音楽を新たに楽しむことができます。

Gaetano Donizetti – ‘The Elixir of Love’

When I was a university student for the first time, I studied French and Italian. As part of my degree, I spent my third year studying in Bergamo, in northern Italy. Bergamo is a wonderful city: split into two, the lower new town, and the older town, which is located within medieval walls and up a hill. I lived in an apartment in the lower town and walked up to my classes in the old buildings of the old town.

Bergamo is often overshadowed by its bigger neighbour, Milan, and there’s a rivalry between the two cities: natives of Bergamo delight in the fact that their city faces east, so it’s essentially showing its backside to Milan.

Hundreds of years ago, Bergamo was a hotbed of opera talent. The composer Gaetano Donizetti was born in Bergamo in 1797 and died there in 1848, and the house where he lived as a child has been open to the public since 2009. In fact, his family just lived in the basement of the house, which is located in the older, upper town. There is a museum dedicated to Donizetti on another site in the old town. It opened in 1906 and contains a huge amount of memorabilia from his life, including many of his personal belongings. The opera house in Bergamo is named after Donizetti. During my year in Bergamo I never got round to going to the opera: on the occasion my friends got tickets, I was ill, and after that there were always so many other things to experience.

This record is a performance of ‘The Elixir of Love’, one of Donizetti’s best-known operas. Luciano Pavarotti holds the world record for most curtain calls (165) when he received a standing ovation of one hour and seven minutes for a performance of this opera in Berlin in 1988. It’s a comedy, but I have to be honest, I find opera very hard to listen to and understand. Nevertheless, this record is a fine opportunity to remember a very enjoyable year in the fantastic city of Bergamo. I read that last year a British musicologist discovered dozens of scores written by Donizetti that had been lost and spread out throughout Europe, never performed or heard before. It’s amazing investigative work that means many more people can now enjoy “new” work by perhaps Bergamo’s most famous son, Gaetano Donizetti.

‘THE LAST EMPEROR’「 ラストエンペラー」OST（1987年）

「ラストエンペラー」は1987年にリリースされたベルナルド・ベルトルッチ監督の映画です。「ラストエンペラー」は中国の最後の皇帝になった愛新覚羅 溥儀（プーイー）の人生を語る映画です。溥儀は6歳に皇帝になって、12歳に退位をやらされて、その後は日本は満州国皇帝をやらされて、戦争後に収容されました。釈放後は普通の国民として生活しました。

「ラストエンペラー」はアカデミー賞を9部門ノミネートされて、全部受賞しました。そのうち、一つの賞はこのレコード、オリジナルサウンドトラックの作曲賞でした。「ラストエンペラー」のオリジナルサウンドトラックは坂本龍一が作曲を9曲、元トーキング・ヘッズのデヴィッド・バーンが作曲5曲、蘇聡が作曲を1曲があります。

僕は日本に来る前中国に3年間住んでいました。その時にもちろん中国の歴史と文化を興味がありました。（今にもそうです。）「ラストエンペラー」はすべて本当の話というわけではないですが、凄く面白い映画です。そして、巨編ですから、中国で見たときはとても面白くてたまらないと思っていました。

今「ラストエンペラー」のサウンドトラックを聞くと、前半にある坂本龍一の曲は中国っぽい楽器をうまく使います。中国のステレオタイプにならないように使えるのは坂本龍一の作曲者としてのスキルや才能だと思います。サウンドトラックの後半にあるデヴィッド・バーンと蘇聡の曲は坂本龍一の曲と映画によく合う曲だと思います。

「ラストエンペラー」の映画を見なくてサウンドトラックのみを聞くでも、夢中にさせる素晴らしいサウンドトラックです。

‘The Last Emperor’ Original Soundtrack (1987)

‘The Last Emperor’ is a 1987 film directed by Bernardo Bertolucci that tells through flashbacks the life story of Puyi, who became the last emperor of China as a small boy, abdicated after revolution, was used by the Japanese as a puppet to give the appearance of legitimacy to their rule in Manchuria, and was later imprisoned by the Chinese Communist Party.

The film won nine Oscars at the 60th Academy Awards, including Best Original Score for this soundtrack, which contains nine compositions by Ryuichi Sakamoto, five by David Byrne, and one by Cong Su.

I lived in China for three years before moving to Japan. I was – and still am – interested in China and Chinese history, and although ‘The Last Emperor’ is not a completely accurate portrayal of the people and events of Puyi’s lifetime, it’s still a fascinating film. And, because it’s an epic (nearly three hours long), watching it while in China was a truly engrossing experience.

Listening to the soundtrack now, Sakamoto’s compositions in the first half of the record feature instruments that effectively evoke a (perhaps idealised, fictional) feeling of China without falling into the trap of using stereotypical tropes that a less skilful or subtle composer might have. The second half of the record features music by David Byrne of Taking Heads and Cong Su. These pieces complement Sakamoto’s compositions and the images on the screen.

Even without the images of the film to accompany it, the soundtrack to ‘The Last Emperor’ alone can feel immersive, which is surely the sign of an effective soundtrack.
