「ONE HOT MINUTE（ワン・ホット・ミニット）」（1995年）

レッド・ホット・チリ・ペッパーズは、1990年代は大変な時期でした。「アンダー・ザ・ブリッジ」と「ギヴ・イット・アウェイ」のシングルの影響で、 1991年にリリースされたアルバム「ブラッド・シュガー・セックス・マジック」はバンドの世界中の大ブレーキになりました。1992年にギタリストのジョン・フルシアンテは突然辞め。その後、いろんなギタリストがバンドに加入しましたが、誰もバンドに合いませんでした。

1993年にレッド・ホット・チリ・ペッパーズのギタリストはデイヴ・ナヴァロになりました。でもデイヴ・ナヴァロはこのバンドでこのアルバム、「ワン・ホット・ミニット」しか作りませんでした。なぜというと、デイヴ・ナヴァロも他のメンバーとの作成方法と収録方法の差が多すぎて、問題になりました。デイヴ・ナヴァロの前のギタリストのジョン・フルシアンテがバンドとよく合いました。若いころからこのバンドが好きで、同じスタイルでギターを演じました。そしてバンドに入る前、ジョン・フルシアンテが他のバンドで演じる経験がなかったから、レッド・ホット・チリ・ペッパーズのファンクみたいなスタイルで簡単にできました。デイヴ・ナヴァロはファンクじゃなくて、クラッシックロックやメタルのスタイルでギターをやりました。その上、バンドの経験を持っていましたから、レッド・ホット・チリ・ペッパーズに合わせるのが困難でした。

「ワン・ホット・ミニット」を作る時にもう一つの問題がありました。歌手と歌詞を作るアンソニー・キーディスは秘密にヘロインとコカインの使用に再発しました。デイヴ・ナヴァロはバンドに入る前からヘロインを使っていて、メンバー同士の関係が早く悪くなってきました。アンソニー・キーディスが書いた歌詞に聞くと、薬物との闘いを明らかに分かります。特に「ワープト」、「エアロプレイン」と「マイ・フレンズ」です。そして「ティアー・ジャーガー」の歌詞のテーマはカート・コバーンの志望です。

ベーシストのフリーは元からバンドの音楽を作成したが、ジョン・フルシアンテがやめた後に歌詞を作ることもしました。「トランセンディング～リヴァーに捧ぐ～」はフリーの亡くなった友達リヴァー・フェニックスについてです。そして「ピー」は昔小さいフリーを叩きのめされた人たちへの答弁です。この曲はフリー自身が歌います。

「ワン・ホット・ミニット」から出したシングルはまあまあ売れたが、このアルバムはファンにとってちょっと残念なレコードでした。バンドのメンバー達自身もあんまりこのアルバム好きじゃなさそうです。2003年にリリースされた「グレイスト・ヒッツ」にこのアルバムから1曲しかありません。「ワン・ホット・ミニット」の公演以来、このあるばむからの曲全然演じていないし、公演中でも3曲を全く演じていませんでした。

「ワン・ホット・ミニット」は悪いアルバムというわけではない。でも僕みたいにジョン・フルシアンテがギタリストの時からレッド・ホット・チリ・ペッパーズが好きになった人たちにジョン・フルシアンテがいないと不思議な感じします。レッド・ホット・チリ・ペッパーズの他のアルバムと全然似てないから、その理由で聞いてみたほうがいいと思います。

Red Hot Chili Peppers – ‘One Hot Minute’

The 1990s were a difficult decade for Red Hot Chili Peppers. A year after their international breakthrough with ‘Blood Sugar Sex Magik’ in 1991, on the back of the success of singles like ‘Under the Bridge’ and ‘Give It Away’, their guitarist John Frusciante abruptly quit. The band enlisted a string of replacements during the following years, but none seemed to fit in.

This album, ‘One Hot Minute’, was released in 1995 with Dave Navarro, formerly of Jane’s Addiction, as guitarist. Because Frusciante had modelled himself on the guitarist before him, Hillel Slovak, he fitted into what many people considered the band’s signature funk-influenced style, both in terms of music and personality. It helped that he had never been in a band before. Navarro, on the other hand, brought his own playing style, influenced by heavy metal and classic rock, and experience of being in a successful band. Things didn’t gel for the band and their new guitarist.

At the same time, the band was struggling with drugs, as they had for most of their career. In particular, singer and lyricist Anthony Kiedis had relapsed and was using heroin and cocaine again. Navarro was also regularly using heroin, which increased the tension between the band members.

Kiedis’ struggles with addiction come through in the lyrics, particularly to ‘Warped’, ‘My Friends’, and ‘Aeorplane’. He also writes about Kurt Cobain’s death in ‘Tearjerker’. After Frusciante’s departure, more of the writing and production fell on the shoulders of the bassist Flea. Although he usually wrote most of the music, for this album he also had to contribute lyrics. His lyrics to ‘Transcending’ are about the death of his friend River Phoenix, and ‘Pea’ (which Flea also sings) is a rant against people who used to beat him up for being smaller than them.

The singles were moderately successful, but the album overall was a disappointment for many critics and fans. It’s clear now how much the band themselves don’t really like ‘One Hot Minute’: only one song was included on the band’s Greatest Hits in 2003; most of the songs on ‘One Hot Minute’ have not been played at all since the end of the One Hot Minute tour; and three songs weren’t even played on that tour.

That’s not to say ‘One Hot Minute’ is a bad album; it’s not. But without Frusciante’s distinctive backing vocals, and with Navarro’s different guitar style, it sounds a bit strange to people like me who started listening to the band when Frusciante was the guitarist. ‘One Hot Minute’ is unlike any other Red Hot Chili Peppers album, and for that reason it is worth a listen: it shows an unusual – and unhappy – interlude in the band’s career.

金沢工業大学もすっかり準備が整って、明日を迎えるだけです(>_<)

明日からは天気も崩れそうなので、時間に余裕をもって試験に臨んでくださいね。。。

「COMPUTER WORLD（コンピューター・ワールド）」(1981年)

最近まで、クラフトワークについてを簡単なことしか分かりませんでした。ドイツ出身、エレクトロニカ、たくさんのアーティストに影響したということは知っていましたが、作品は一曲しか知りませんでした。1982年リリースされた「モデル」のビデオは見たことがあります。

クラフトワークのアルバムをたくさん聞くと、いろんな面白いところがあります。コンセプトアルバムですが、ファンタジーをテーマにしているのではなく、普通の生活であることをテーマにしてあります。例えば、「アウトバーン」（1974年）はドイツの高速道路で走っているのがテーマ。「放射能」（1975年）はラジオと原発についてです。そして「ヨーロッパ特急」（1977年）は鉄道を隠喩に使った、ヨーロッパについてです。（このアルバムはすべてPMCであります。）

クラフトワークのアルバムを聞くと、声があまりないです。ですから、車で高速道路に走っている、電車に乗ってヨーロッパを渡っている、原発にいるという興味深いテーマを音楽だけで伝えています。僕は聞きながらこれは素晴らしいなと思っていました。

「COMPUTER WORLD（コンピューター・ワールド）のテーマは社会へのコンピュータや技術の進出です。このアルバムは前のアルバムより歌詞がありますが、歌っている歌詞ではなく、ほとんど話しています。僕が思うのは、このアルバムでクラフトワークは自信を持って作りたい音楽を作っているようです。いいメロディーがたくさんあります。コンピュータをテーマにしてある曲を作るためにエレクトロニカの楽器を使うのは当たり前でしょう。

クラフトワークを聞いてから、僕がもっと良く知っているアーティストへの影響が明らかに分かってきました。もちろん1980年代にブームしたヒューマン・リーグ、デペシュ・モード、ソフト・セルなどはクラフトワークの影響を受けました。それから、数十年たってもクラフトワークの影響をうけたアーティストはたくさん出てきます。例えば、ジョン・フルシアンテの1990年代～2000年代のソロアルバム、デヴィッド・ボウイが1970年代にベルリンで作ったアルバム、U2の1990年代のアルバムにクラフトワークっぽいところがあります。そしてダフト・パンクの服とメディアの注目から逃げる態度がクラフトワークらしいと思います。

もう一つあります。2013年のNHK紅白歌合戦で初めてサカナクションを見ました。曲は全く覚えてないですが、最初と最後にバンドのメンバーが全員自分のパソコンのまえに立っているのは覚えています。見た時に「面白いな」と思っていました。今それを考えると、クラフトワークの影響だと分かりました。

Kraftwerk – ‘Computer World’ (1981)

Until recently, I didn’t know much about Kraftwerk: I knew they were German, I knew they made electronic music, and I knew they had been cited as influences by many other artists, but I only knew one song. ‘The Model’, was a big hit in the UK when re-released in 1982 and was occasionally played on TV channels like VH1 Classic that were dedicated to showing music from the 1960s, 70s and 80s.

I listened to most of Kraftwerk’s back catalogue and I found so many interesting ideas. There are concept albums, but instead of them being concept albums about abstract ideas or fantasy worlds as is often the case with prog rock or rock bands, Kraftwerk’s concept albums tend to focus more on everyday life: for example, ‘Autobahn’ (1974), which is about travelling on the German motorway system; ‘Radio Activity’ (1975), about radioactivity and radio communication; ‘Trans Europe Express’ (1977), which is about the idea of Europe, expressed through the metaphor of the cross-continental railway. (All of these albums are available in the PMC, by the way.)

Another thing about Kraftwerk’s music that stood out for me is that on those earlier albums, it’s the instruments that convey the concept, not the lyrics. There are very few vocals on Kraftwerk’s early albums, so the feeling of being in a car on the motorway, or on a train, or in a nuclear facility is created by the music itself, not the words.

‘Computer World is about the increasing prevalence of computers in society. The songs on this album have more vocals than previous albums, but not those vocals are not really sung: they tend to be spoken. Kraftwerk on ‘Computer World’ sound to me like a more polished act that is more confident in what it is doing and what it wants to do. The band’s use of electronic instruments work perfectly to convey the theme of the album. After all, what better way to immerse the listener in a world surrounded by computers than to use electronics? There are plenty of catchy melodies here too, and there’s enough happening musically in each song to make this album worth repeated listens.

Since listening to Kraftwerk, I can hear and see their influence on several of the other artists I’m more familiar with. Of course there is an obvious influence on the other synth-pop bands of the 1980s like the Human League, Soft Cell, and Depeche Mode, to name just a few. Another obvious one is Coldplay’s use of the melody from ‘Computer Love’ in their song ‘Talk’.

But I have also noticed the influence of Kraftwerk’s aural and visual style on artists from other genres, even several decades after most of their albums were released. For example, the use of synthesisers and drum machines and the overall atmosphere of John Frusciante’s solo albums; the albums David Bowie recorded in Berlin in the 1970s (‘Low’, “Heroes”, and ‘Lodger’); the albums that U2 made in the 1990s (‘Achtung Baby’, ‘Zooropa’, and ‘Pop’); Daft Punk’s insistence on obscuring their identities and secluding themselves from media attention. I remember seeing the Japanese band Sakanaction’s first appearance on the NHK New Year’s Eve concert show (‘Kouhaku Uta Gassen’) in 2013 and being struck by them starting and ending the song by standing behind their laptops, wearing matching suits. I now realise that this, like so much else, was the influence of Kraftwerk.

長いようで短かった10年。人間の歴史と一緒で、振り返るとあっという間・・・

昨日は野々市市制施行10周年ということで、フォルテでセレモニーが行われました。

そして夜はカミーノでイルミネーション点灯式！！

準備は万端♬

去年は11日にちなんで、”11”からカウントダウンだったけど、今年は悪天候なので、

”3”からカウントダウン。

雨にも関わらず、結構ちびっこたちも来てて、みんなで、せーの！！

16,030個の電球が煌めきましたよ～♡

昔は神社が遊び場だった・・

懐かしいお祭り。。

時代が変わっても、神社に人が集まってくる、そんな地域がうれしい。

お天気は残念だったけど、野々市「町」が単独市制施行の野々市「市」になって

駆け足の10年を感じた1日でした。。。

これからも、住みよくて！楽しくて！子供たちの声がたくさん聞けて！！

煮物にしたら、ヤーコンの風味が薄れたので、焼いたほうがよかったと後悔・・・

11月3日からはカミーノの物産販売コーナーで販売される予定らしいので、今度は焼いてみよう

美味しいものいっぱい、体験コーナーもにぎわってて、マスク姿はそのままだけど、なんだかうれしいな❢

ジェームス・テイラーのPMCでみつけた！オムニバス盤「SOCA TRAIN」

「SOCA TRAIN」（1984年）

このオムニバス盤はソカという音楽のレコードですが、実は僕はソカについてを何も知りません。（でもこのレコードの1曲を知っていました：Arrowの「HOT HOT HOT」。）ちょっと調べると簡単に説明できます。ソカはトリニダード・トバゴで誕生したカリプソと他のジャンルを混ぜた1970年代前半に新しくできたジャンルです。今回のブログでこのレコードを選ぶ理由はトラック・リストにある一人のアーティストの名前に目を引かれたからです。そのアーティストLord Kitchenerです。

Lord Kitchenerはトリニダード出身のカリプソ歌手でした。名前は分からないかもしれませんが、曲は聞いたことがあると思います。Lord Kitchenerの有名な曲はハリー・ベラフォンテが歌った「JUMP IN THE LINE（SHAKE, SENORA）」です。

でも、Lord Kitchenerの最も有名な曲は「LONDON IS THE PLACE FOR ME」です。僕はこの曲を2014年の映画「パッディントン」で知りました。「パッディントン」には若い難民の熊がペルーからロンドンまで新しい家と家族を探しに来る話です。見たことがない方は是非見てください。最高に面白い映画です。

Lord Kitchenerは1948年に祝うために「LONDON IS THE PLACE FOR ME」を作曲しました。その時、1027人は西インド諸島に船を乗って、新しい生活を決まるためにイギリスに行きました。その船の名前は「エンパイア・ウィンドラッシュ」でした。その時、西インド諸島は大英帝国に入っていたので、簡単にイギリスに行けました。その人たちは「ウィンドラッシュ世代」と言われてます。「エンパイア・ウィンドラッシュ」でイギリスについたとき、Lord Kitchenerはニュースのカメラの前で「LONDON IS THE PLACE FOR ME」を歌いました。「LONDON IS THE PLACE FOR ME」は新しくきた人たちの楽観的な歌詞があります。例えば、Lord Kitchenerはロンドンで暖かく迎えてくれる地元の人たちが多いということを歌います。

残念ながら、地元の人たちはそんなに暖かく迎えてくれなかった。英国人なのに、西インド諸島から来た人たちはいろんな障害がありました。それでも、ウィンドラッシュ世代の人たちはイギリスの社会や文化に大きな影響がありました。対二次世界大戦の後、西インド諸島はイギリスの建物を立て直すこともして、国民保健サービスと公共交通にも働いていました。このレコードを聞くと、文化の影響を分かると思います。今でもウィンドラッシュ世代の人たちは差別と戦っています。

Various – ‘Soca Train’

Truth be told, I know very little about soca music, or Caribbean music in general, although I did know one song from this record (‘Hot Hot Hot’ by Arrow). It turns out that soca is from Trinidad and Tobago, and grew out of calypso mixed with a variety of other genres. The reason I’ve picked this record for this month’s blog is that one name on the track list jumped out at me: Kitchener, or to give him his full name, Lord Kitchener.

Lord Kitchener was a calypso singer from Trinidad whose name you might not know but whose songs you may have heard. One of his famous ones is ‘Jump in the Line (Shake, Señora)’, which he composed and which was sung by Harry Belafonte.

Arguably Lord Kitchener’s most famous song is ‘London is the Place for Me’, which I knew from the excellent 2014 film ‘Paddington’ – if you haven’t seen it, I can’t recommend it highly enough. A cover of the song features prominently in the film, which tells of a young bear’s attempts to find a home in London after travelling as a stowaway from Peru.

Lord Kitchener became very famous in Britain in 1948 when he arrived on the Empire Windrush, a ship that brought 1,027 people from the West Indies to live and work in Britain. As the ship arrived in Britain, Kitchener sang a couple of verses of ‘London is the Place for Me’, which he had composed specially for the occasion, for news cameras. The sentiment of the lyrics relates the optimism of the new arrivals, who would come to be known as the Windrush Generation: Kitchener sings about the warm welcome any newcomer will receive in London.

Unfortunately, that optimism was misplaced. The new arrivals, despite being British subjects, faced numerous obstacles in their new lives in the “mother country”. Nevertheless, they had a huge effect on life and culture in the UK, part of which this compilation record demonstrates. Even now, in 2021, members of the Windrush Generation fight against discrimination from various areas of British society, despite the huge contribution they have made, helping to rebuild the country after World War Two, and to prop up the health service and public transportation system.

少しずつ学生のにぎわいも戻ってきてる感じがします。

ところで、今日はいつも素通りしてた植え込み横・・・

はたっと気づいたのだが・・・

2年ぶり♡工大祭開催しました、、、、、よっ！！

なにっ！？行きたかったのに(-_-メ)　　と思ったあなた。

ごめんなさい。。

工大生と教職員のみ参加、しかも屋内企画だけの模擬店無しだったんですぅ・・・

でもでも！ちゃあ～んと、WAVEプロジェクトのみんなが工大祭特番「ミライクエスト～願いを叶えて～」で中継も交えて工大祭の様子を放送してましたΣ（・□・；）

気づいたあなたは、工大通♡

ツイッターもインスタも都度都度投稿あったから、楽しんでもらえたかな。。。

「WHAT’S GOING ON（愛のゆくえ）」（1971年）

1970年3月にマーヴィン・ゲイのデュエット・パートナーで大切な友人のタミー・テレルが死亡しました。その後、ゲイはうつ病になり、薬物とアルコールに溺れていきました。同時にゲイはアメリカの社会に対して不安や不満の気持ちを持ち始めました。ゲイは、アメリカ軍隊でベトナム戦争から帰国した弟から退役軍人の悪い経験について話を聞きました。

マーヴィン・ゲイはこのいくつかの出来事をアルバムに盛り込みました。そのアルバムは1971年の「WHAT’S GOING ON（ホワッツ・ゴーイン・オン、愛のゆくえ）」です。歌詞と音楽は両方ともそれ以前のモータウンが出した曲と全然違うので、モータウンの首脳陣は発売には消極的でした。「WHAT’S GOING ON（ホワッツ・ゴーイン・オン、愛のゆくえ）」にはモータウンが普段出していた2分~3分のラブ・ソングはありません。短い曲から長い曲のセグエもあり、スキャットもあり、ソウルやリズムアンドブルースやジャズやゴスペルのジャンルもあり、そして同じメロディーをいくつもの曲に出していることもあります。その同じメロディーが何回も出てくる理由は、「WHAT’S GOING ON（ホワッツ・ゴーイン・オン、愛のゆくえ）」は連作歌曲だからです。連作歌曲というのはテーマでつながっていて、順番に演じるように作っている数曲のことです。

Marvin Gaye – ‘What’s Going On’

In March 1970, Marvin Gaye’s duet partner and close friend Tammi Terrell died. Gaye fell into a depression and began abusing drugs and alcohol. Gaye also began to experience a growing feeling of discontent towards American society, a feeling which was strengthened by letters he had received from his brother, who had served in the Vietnam War, describing the poor treatment of war veterans.

These things culminated in what many believe is Gaye’s finest album, ‘What’s Going On’, which was released in 1971. Lyrically and musically, ‘What’s Going On’ is a departure from standard Motown fare, so it faced some opposition from within Motown prior to its release. Instead of two- or three-minute radio-friendly songs, the album features short songs seguing into long songs, scat singing, a mix of genres that includes soul, R&B, jazz, and gospel, and the same melodies repeated in several places on the album,. The reason for the recurring melodies is that ‘What’s Going On’ is actually a song cycle: a set of songs that are linked by a theme and intended to be performed in a particular order.

Many of the songs on the album – particularly the opening two songs, ‘What’s Going On’ and ‘What’s Happening Brother’ – are from the perspective of a returning soldier, who struggles to come to terms with life back in the USA after serving in the Vietnam War. Gaye focuses on a wide range of social issues in just nine songs: drug addiction in ‘Flying High (in the Friendly Sky)’, the environment in ‘Mercy Mercy Me (The Ecology)’, poverty in ‘Inner City Blues (Make Me Wanna Holler)’, and disadvantaged children in ‘Save the Children’. Gaye’s spirituality is also prominent throughout the album, in ‘God Is Love’ and “Wholy Holy’. These topics are a far cry from the upbeat songs about young love upon which Motown had built its reputation.

Despite the concern of Motown’s executives, ‘What’s Going On’ was a hit and it regularly features prominently in lists of the greatest albums ever. Marvin Gaye went on to enjoy more commercial success while also experiencing financial and personal problems. He died in 1984, aged 44, after being shot by his father during a domestic argument.

The saddest thing about this album? Even 50 years on, we haven’t solved a single one of the social issues that Gaye sang about in 1971.
